His attention were taken up by the two girls using it however. Rather than any formal moves or rules, both of them seemed to move in a blur of action. The raven haired one danced and bent like a flame in the wind, striking out quickly and brutally. On the other hand, the bigger one seemed to be able to move in strong bursts and fairly crackled with energy.
What really got him watching them was how intense they seemed, and how the slap of flesh on flesh seemed to fill the air around them. They both moved quickly slamming together in storms of blows. Neither one seemed to be holding back, and didn't appear to be about to cry like he'd expect to see from girls, especially of that age.
And then the green eyed one sent out a fist that crashed into the ground, which would have seemed normal, except her fist seemed to have electricity arcing around it when it hit.
"Huh?!" he blurted in confusion.
Hai Pahn smiled slightly at the other man's astonished look. "Makoto is quite the student. She is talented in the fighting arts, which amusing since she also enjoys helping out in the kitchens when she's allowed to."
"But how did a little girl manage that?"
"Her training helped in that. Both of them have such techniques, and are learning them. That is part of their individual schools, and those are only the basic moves."
"'Basic'? Then they learn more?"
"It is expected," the old master replied, "Each of the schools teaches special techniques to only its own students. To master that school, one must learn everything that they can from their path."
"You mean to say that there are all these special arts just waiting to be learned?"
"Yes, but you must understand something. One can not learn all the techniques of the twelve schools. Each one has limitations that come up for the training. Someone who works to be able to take the hardest blows will have a hard time learning agility or speed, for instance."
"And learning from one school means that you can't learn from another?" Genma asked with a frown.
"Pretty much. Oh, one can possibly learn from a related school, but there are some techniques that a student from one school can not learn from another. But then, they are not meant to."
"They aren't?"
"No, they're not. When one settles onto a path, one must follow it and not try to run on another. Those two girls have each gone on their own paths, and they are learning their schools' styles." Hai Pahn gave the younger man a measuring look. "And when they are ready, they will more and more powerful moves until they have mastered them all. They might choose one or two to be more proficient in, but they will know how to use them all."
Genma nodded absently and looked at where the darker haired of the girls was now moving with what looked like fire on her arm, but without getting burned. He had already known that his son was skilled and talented, but this opened whole new avenues towards making the boy the best martial artist ever. Once he did, and the boy married Tendo's daughter, everything would be set just how he liked it. The idea that he could have a future better than he'd planned on made him nearly giddy, and he had to work hard to repress any sign of it.
Unfortunately, he was lousy at doing so, and Hai Pahn raised a brow at him.
"So what do we do now?"
"It is quite simple," the older man informed him, "Right now it might be best if we:
