New Challenger: Omens [Episode 10144]

Akane snorted. "At least that's the worst that's happened today."

Nabiki winced. "You really shouldn't say things like that, Sis."

"Why?"

"You know what goes on around here. Saying things like that will only tempt the fates." Nabiki pointedly looked at Ranma.

"I don't think so. For once, we're going to have a nice day, without some idiot messing it up." Akane was trying to be upbeat and ignore the feeling that something was wrong.

"Caw!" A crow slammed into the pavement, apparently dead before that ungentle landing.

Crack the pavement split in a seam that led all the way to Ranma.

There came the sound of breaking glass. Nabiki immediately checked. "The mirror in my compact just broke in half."

"It doesn't mean anything," insisted Akane. "Nothing is going to happen."

Bong! Bong! Bong! Bong! Bong! Bong! Bong! Bong! Bong! Bong! Bong! Bong! Bong! Krak!

"A temple bell tolling thirteen times and cracking," observed Ranma.

"You're right Akane, nothing's going to happen," agreed Nabiki. She was a rational, intelligent, modern woman. She didn't believe in things like ghosts, curses, omens, things of that nature. Even if they showed up regularly. Hmmm. Where had she put her lucky rabbit's foot?

Crackle Boom!

"Ominous thunder?" Ranma asked, beginning to twitch a little.

"Meow?!"

"Oh look, a dozen black cats running past us," pointed out Nabiki.

"Eeeep!" Ranma said, who most definitely wasn't scared or nervous. Heavens no.

Akane began looking nervously around. "Okayyyy. Now I'm beginning to get a little worried."

A cold wind blew past them, leaving the three teenagers shivering.

"Hmmmm," said Nabiki after not finding any of her good luck charms except for the remains of her rabbit's foot. "Whether it's safer to run home in a different direction than you or to just stick around and have you two ready to handle a threat. Decisions decisions."

"Maybe it doesn't involve us?" hoped Akane out loud.

Alas they were about to meet a new challenger, one who was far more powerful than they could guess, and the challenger was out to deal once and for all with:

• Nabiki? Is it the Yakuza? Someone she wronged? A customer who wants a refund?
• Akane? Why should Ranma have all the "wronged in the past" rival/enemy/challengers? She's a martial artist too, right?
• Soun? Is this some dark deed in his mysterious past returned to haunt him?
• Genma? With his habits is it that difficult to believe he'd have someone out for vengeance on his little panda backside?
• Happosai? With all the potential for payback, how could this be unreasonable?
• someone else?
