But he also knew that one way to financial independence was having your own ship. If you could make enough money off of it, you could live how you wanted. It might not make one wealthy, but if the debts were paid, it could be an attractive possibility.
The one that had drawn him here was an especially welcome opportunity.
Years earlier, the Minbari had been developing new ships for their fleets. Like humans, they needed to create prototypes to see how sound their designs would be. But unlike humanity, their ships were more advanced. While Earth ships had to deal with things like using rotating sections for gravity, the Minbari had something that created such fields.
However, one of their more advanced ships had proven to be a problem. During a test of its jump engines, a computer glitch had caused the unmanned ship to go into the jump point just after it had been opened. That sent the vessel into a course that simply could not be easily determined, as it could have come out of hyperspace anywhere. After a long and hard search, they were forced to give up the ship for lost, which was not something they had liked to do, seeing as it had some components that were advanced for them even now.
And he had the only map to its current location. Even if it had drifted somewhat, the map would help him determine where it went. Once he found it, he knew that he could do many things with that ship. He could sell it to one of likely very interested buyers, like the Minbari, Narn, Centauri, or the Earth Alliance. Heck, even one of the corporations would pay a lot of credits for something like that. But he could also keep it as his own, using it as he saw fit, and having to worry about much less of a debt than any normal purchase of a ship would allow.
Plus it would be one grand end for an adventure.
Stuffing the disc into a place where he would neither break it, or have it taken, he planned out what he would have to do as he walked back to his rented room. As it stood, he might have to change the information from its current incarnation to encrypted data crystal, but he saw no problems there. However, he did have to get to the ship and fast. He knew that there had to be eyes watching someone like Squee, and they would know that he had to have something special.
So time was now of the essence, and he had to make certain that he moved fast.
Which meant that his first stop after getting to his quarters would be to:
