As for the coursework? Boring! The main thing to do was study for her college entry exams. Japanese had enough different kanji and different ways of doing things that she had to adjust. The colleges were better in some way here, they were certainly more accepted in Western societies than some of the Chinese ones.
Dozens of questions waited for release until lunchtime when she could make those arrangements. Concerns that had to be put aside for now.
"The water lilies are in bloom,
as I sit in my lonely room," sang Mahoro as she put the wash out.
Pirotess sat back in a deck chair on the roof platform and lazed back. It was odd how some of the simple pleasures still had their fascination. Relaxing with a cold iced drink on a warm day that seemed to promise a hot summer.
Later she'd consider getting some sword and knife practice. Wouldn't do to let her skills get rusty.
"Achooo! Achooo!"
Reaching down for a kleenex, Pirotess wondered if some Earth germ had gotten past her innoculations.
Deedlit was her name. A princess of the Star Elves. A Detective Second Class.
Okay, she was 12th in line and mainly left to her own devices as a result.
So when she'd announced that she was joining the Galaxy Police, there had been more along the line of quiet acceptance of that decision than not.
The Star Elves were exactly what you might expect. Tree-ships, techno-magic, blasters, a sort of mix of futuristic tech and back-to-nature feels. They took the place of Jurai in this universe, and hardly anyone not intimate with either would know the difference.
Deedlit had quickly discovered though that she wasn't allowed to do much. Not because of her race or her gender - but because of her lineage. She was a princess and therefore everyone above her in the ranks sought to keep her from getting into dangerous duties.
Still, she managed to do the occasional important case, and her skills weren't meager.
The only bad point came when she had been on the trail of the dreaded space pirate Pirotess. Though frankly Pirotess was given only a "3" rating in the priorities of those who hunted space pirates. The last time Pirotess had even killed someone had been four hundred years previously, she'd been leaving her victims alive since then and frankly there were nastier and more vicious pirates to become higher priority.
It had been that last victim that had traumatized both Pirotess and Deedlit and caused their current enmity.
Parn dulac Ashram. Undercover GP operative. He had crossed Pirotess' path many times, and a mutual respect had developed. He vowed to take her into custody. She indicated this was a game they'd played.
A small world named Lodoss. A raid that went poorly. A shot that missed its target. Pirotess had later burned a message into a wall, claiming it had been a mistake. Since then she had never killed when it could be avoided. Some believed her truly repetant.
Deedlit was not so generous. Parn had been bumbling at times, quite skilled in others. The promise of greatness, forever stilled. She had been hunting for Pirotess and to bring her to justice since then.
Even for an elf, four hundred years was a long time to hold a grudge.
Her ship awoke her gently, letting her know that Pirotess' trail had been detected in this very star system.
Deedlit yawned and listened to the information on this world with the unimaginative name of "Earth".
