Nodoka wasn't foolish. Although her first impulse was to give the book to her son, or use the book to smooth his way with his fiancee, other options also presented themselves.
The engagement with Akane had been given precedence for a number of reason's, not the least of which was the apparent attraction between Ranma and Akane. Then there were the other girls pursuing her son. To her knowledge they had little real claim to her son, but there were hints that the situation was not as simple as she had first thought, or as Genma had told her it was.
And although she had certainly seen evidence that Ranma was interested in Akane, she had also seen some of the tensions in their relationship.
As Nodoka stood on the bridge another thought came to her. Although she had seen hints and been told by Soun and Genma many times that Ranma and Akane were deeply in love, she had never really talked to Ranma about it. In fact, she hadn't talked to Ranma much at all since she had found him. What did he want? What were his dreams? She didn't know, and despite their reunion after ten long years of separation, he was still almost a stranger.
Her eyes misted a bit as memories of her little boy at play, asleep, and resting in her arms flashed through her mind. A gentle breeze rustled the pages of the still open book in her hands, bringing her out of her reflections and back to what had started her reminiscing in the first place.
Here she held a book which offered the promise of ensuring her dreams of Ranma being a man among men beyond any doubt and almost guaranteed numerous grandchildren if she used it correctly. The question still remained, Should she use it, and how?
She could give the book to Ranma immediately and hope for the best, she could try to use book herself and make things happen, or she could wait for the best moment to intervene using the knowledge from the book to make her dreams reality. She could also wait to decide until after talking with Ranma and investigating those vague hints in the back of her mind that things might be more than they seemed to be.
What was most important? Her dreams of a manly son and a horde of grandchildren to spoil, or her son's happiness? While it would be easy to assume that the two were one and the same, where they really? And if she chooses to use the book herself, will she even be able to? Some of those techniques require chi manipulation, something she was fairly certain she wouldn't be able to do.
Just giving the book to Ranma seems to chancy. Given the events that seemed centered around his life, he might not even have a chance to open it before something happens to it. With no guarantee that she can even make use of the techniques herself, using the book herself probably isn't the best choice.
Does she . . .
