Ranma's Inn: Nexus [Episode 105392]

by Kestral

There were places one could go to in most realities where things were not quite right. Where the boundaries between time and space seemed thin. In another universe, a proprietor named Callahan had a saloon. In another universe, it was the Restaurant At The End Of The Universe. In yet another, a police call box that seemed much larger on the inside than the out. There was Sigil and the City Of Unity in another set of universes, or Rifts Earth in another multiversal set, or Twilight's Gate in another.

At such places, the rare elsewhere became commonplace. Odds went awry and coincidence ruled.

One such place had been very minor for a number of years while being apparently abandoned by people and society. The Chaos had gathered in that intervening time.

Now the "Saotome Inn" was open for business once again.

A spirit seemed to look everything over and sum up his feelings on this. "Ara-ra?"

Then another spirit appeared to hold the first one's hand. The place had a new owner, a new master, and it would be well cared for.

That unsaid message passed and the two spirits faded again in the early morning light.

The chaos, however, remained. Just waiting for a chance to bubble forth anew.

Ranma awoke early and began a series of exercises and sword drills. This was not an all-consuming passion within him, but a combination of duty as the heir of his school and a means of focussing his attention. When he was doing swordwork, everything flowed and his problems were momentarily tabled.

For some reason, while doing one of the more complex manuevers, he'd felt almost as if he were being guided through it. For an eyeblink he'd seen the dojo as it had been generations ago. Then the moment had passed.

It wasn't long before Mahoro began breakfast, and pleasant odors wafted out from the kitchen. This helped to rouse one of the guests.

Before he left the dojo, Ranma went with a crazy impulse despite being alone and bowed once to the dojo itself. It had been a remarkably rewarding exercise this time. Perhaps because his ancestors had once trod that very floor doing the same thing.

Ri Kohran sat down to bits of fish and rice, a bowl of miso soup, and green tea. Fairly old fashioned as she'd expected pancakes or something in Japan. Oh well.

Pirotess stirred but vowed she wouldn't arise until noon at least.

Mahoro made an idle mental note that soups and stews were likely to be a mainstay of the menu as most of the operating expenses were likely to be routed into repairing the neglect the old building had suffered through. Soups and stews could be spread out fairly easily and could be adapted to differing ingredients when the market had sales.

Ranma ate quickly, then prepared for school. Ri Kohran followed suit, but was a bit slower due to not having unpacked everything yet. Nor had all her supplies arrived yet, though she had sent off for them as soon as she had a mailing address.
