Her sister turned around seemingly innocent. "Nothing, nothing at all."
They exchanged looks for a bit. Then Naoko sidled towards the stairs again. "Well, see ya later. It's pretty late so I should be going to bed."
Fumika rubbed her forehead and groaned. "Naoko, I have a headache. So I'm not going to ask you what you where doing out. I am not even going to think of it at all, or try to remember it. But..." Her eyes blanked over and she double blinked. Mouth wide, she asked; "what was I going to ask you?"
"Why do I care. Honestly Fumika. Just because you can't sleep and you take a nightsandwich. You shouldn't expect me to keep track of things you say this late in the day." As an afterthought she glanced at the clock on the wall. "Sorry, my bad. This EARLY in the night. C'mon it's 3 in the morning. You should be in bed and I should help you there." She grabbed Fumikas arm and started to pull.
"No, wait. The food!"
Naoko looked back at the table and sighed. "Alright. Eat your midnight snack. THEN I dragg you upstairs." She let go of her Fumika and over a chair to sit in. "Actually, give me a sandwich as well."
Later...* * * * *
Much later.
Naoko managed to get Fumika dragged into bed. "Phew." She breathed out as she closed her sisters door behind her. "Hopefully she won't remember seeing me up this late later on. Now I just need to get into bed and get some form of sleep before mom finds me."
"Yes," a door creaked shut a bit further down the corridor, "about that."
"Uh oh." Naoko turned around, trying to look innocent again.
No, that's wrong. She beamed innocence, the kind of innocence you only really show if you know you're guilty. Wich of course is just the kind of 'innocence' that a mother picks up straight off the bat.
"Naoko dear?" Hanase asked, crossing her arms under her chest. (Wich, for the sake of all of you who feel they need to know these things, wasn't very impressive) "What are you doing up this late?"
"Errr..." Naoko gulped. Her mother was quite an impossing figure, leaning against the wall as she was. "I was just helping Fumi back into bed. I swear!" She tried to look even more innocent. Though somehow looking sheepish in spite of it. "I heard," she said nervously, "some... noise... downstairs." Now she was nodding as she was speaking. "Yes, there was some noise that woke me up. So I had to go and check it. You know one of 'them' might have gotten in."
Her mother nodded, both to herself and for Naoko to continue. "I see..."
"Yes I went down to check the noise and I saw Fumika eating a midnight snack." She made a face. "Well sort of. It was 3 in the morning really and I was, am quite sleepy." She yawned for effect.
"I see." Her mom said again. "So this would have nothing to do with a certain tamers son coming back from a long trip in the league?"
If it was possible, the so-called innocence doubled. "Uhm, no. Nothing at all. I don't even remember the name of Kens dads son. Why should him coming back have anything to do with me? I don't think he's cute or anything. Why I haven't even seen him since he left. There's nothing, nothing at all that ties me to him and no reason for me to be up this late in the day at all. None, absolutely none."
Hanase held her daughters eyes for a moment. "Are you," she asked bemusedly, "quite finished?"
"Err. Yeah?"
Hanase nodded one final time and leaned away from the wall. "What is somewhat lacking in your story is the reason for why you helped your sister back into bed. Also-"
"She had a headache. She was almost delerious. I had to help her just to keep her standing." Panic seeped into Naoko like a snake constring around her torso. "I think she's dying. Really. You should take a look!"
"Really." Sarcasm dripped from Hanases voice like honey from it's pot.
She clapped her hands together. "Naoko!"
"Yes?"
"Here is what will happen. You and I will go to bed. We will sleep for a couple of hours. Then YOU will go and milk the girls. I'd say five O'clock would do to wake up don't you? That way we'll be able to have a nice LONG talk. Just you, me and your dad."
Naoko started to say something then stopped. She sighed a long pained sigh. "Yes mom." She closed the door behind her.
Hanase sighed as well and opened her room. "It's started now huh?" Suddenly she grinned. "Maybe we'll have someone else there as well."
