The whole mess had started with a sword, and a cursed one at that. Or that was what everyone who came into contact with it said. Not that it was an evil item, but that it caused certain... effects that hadn't been expected.
Back in the days of feudal Japan, when the Shogun and the sword ruled, there had been a young man of a samurai line that had leaned more towards being a 'lover, not a fighter' cliche. To be sure, he had been a skilled swordsman, but he had also been a ladies man. When he went to a see a lady, his luck with her was certain.
Soon, it was told that all a woman had to do was to hold his sword and she would be enthralled. Once he died, the blade was kept in safe keeping, for when a woman and a man held it together, she would be 'destined to sheathe his sword' and that 'the red string would bind them forever'. But it had been stolen by a person or persons unknown.
Three guesses who that was, and Kuno had been put out that he hadn't gotten it.
Happosai had been happy to have something that might be able to get him a girl, but it had been taken after he had told his students of it. Genma and Soun, while celebrating at a local bar what they thought would be a great plan to marry off Ranma and Akane, had been congratulated each other on the gaining of the mystical weapon. And one patron had listened and known what they were talking about, so he went to talk to the head of the family that was supposed to guard it.

They sent Matoko to retrieve it and when she showed up (with the residents of the Hinata-sou following her), she demanded the return of the sword. The pair of Soun and Genma did not want to part with it, so the swordswoman told them that she would fight for its return to its rightful place.
So Ranma had been 'volunteered' to fight a duel with the girl by his father. They had squared off, each trying to figure out the other's strengths and weaknesses. And as they were ready to start the fight, things happened that canceled it.
Azuza Shiratori started them. She had been passing by and became interested in the crowd that was forming. And that was when she spotted a turtle, a flying one which she just had to have. The ice skating fighter chased her 'Pierre' into the impromtu ring where it had passed a girl with a bokken. That girl ran into Ranma, while Azuza tried to use a table that had an old sword on it to reach up and catch her newest quarry. It collapsed under her weight, sending sword flying, only to land in the hands of the pair of fighters just sitting up after knocking into each other.
At the same time.
Ranma and Matoko had taken one look at each other and had rushed to leave the area for a more horizontally-comfortable place, tossing the sword as they went. He could remember seeing it being caught by that Keitaro and another girl, but he had been too busy picking up the girl who had been his opponent only a few moments earlier.
That brought him to the current time, but it didn't explain what he was going to do. Magically induced or no, he had slept with her and there would be things to be dealt with. But right now, he was thinking about:
