Great Will: The Rules [Episode 107273]

by Jamil Nate

It took a little while for Ranma to read the whole booklet and understand the rules.

The background story of the game was pretty simple: A single and powerful empire had ruled over the game world for generations. However, the whole imperial family was killed in dark and mysterious circomstances. The whole power structure crumbled, precipitating Civil War. Each player was a warlord among many vying for the Throne, using his personal army of servants and magic in the process.

After inventoring his cards, Ranma realized he had a mercenary/adventurer themed deck. It was a rather generalist and versatile deck. There were more specialized decks out there like Necromancer/Army of Undead, Religion/Holy War, Defenders of Nature, Thieves' Guild and so on...

In all, there was only three different types of cards:

First, the Character/Monster cards, like Akane and Kasumi. They were the soldiers fighting for their warlord. The game consisted on pitting them against one another in epic battles for dominance.

Second, the Item cards. They ranged from mundane weapons and armors (dagger, broadsword, longbow, chain mail, wood shield, etc...) to magical items/ artifacts of Legend (ring of invisibility, flying carpet, staff of arcane power, etc...). It was the main way of somewhat 'permanently' enhancing characters.

Third and last, the modifier cards which included events, spells, military units, special maneuvers among other things. They were used to further enhance your characters, hamper the opposition and counter your opponent's own modifier cards.

So basically, Ranma had to summon characters, equip them as best as possible and send them into battle, using modifier cards to help them defeat the Enemy. Each victory would let him win new cards and rise his warlord experience level.

Ranma sighed. Since he was a complete beginner, he could only summon one character, one item and one modifier (played right from the start or held in reserve). Only by winning official duels with other players would he raise in level and make his summoning capacity grow.

Officially, the cards came to life thanks to highly advanced holographic technology inside the official playing boards. Ranma wondered where he could find or buy one when he saw a box near the Tendo house.

Opening it, he found the playing board he needed with a written note from Com: "You will need this to play. I almost forgot to give it to you, sorry"

Ranma examined the high-tech device and decided to test it. He slipped the bracer appendage on his left wrist, switched the playing board on and drew a character card.

As soon as he put it on the designated slot, a beam of light shot out and struck the courtyard. There was a yellow flash then a female silhouette appeared. As the girl was regaining her bearings, Ranma recognized her easily. It was...
