No Tendo: Professor Father [Episode 107413]

by Kender

Sitting in his darkened study, Professor Tomoe looked over his papers again and wondered what he was doing wrong. As far as he could tell, he hadn't been off, but his equations were still telling him that he wasn't right. But he couldn't find any mistakes in either his calculations or his results, so he didn't know just why he was not getting them to match up.

With a sigh he leaned back in his chair and ran a tired hand through his hair and began to wonder if he should just give up for the night and go to sleep. He knew that he was exhausted, and that a night's worth of visitation to his bed would be good. But he was reluctant to leave with something like this still undone, and head to a room that would be echoing with familiar sounds that would never be heard again.

At least Hotaru had the opportunity to conk out for the night, even if she had decided to do so on the couch in his study. Glancing over to look at her, he could see her curled up on the cushions with her eyes closed and her arms wrapped around a bear that Ranma had won for her when they'd gone to a festival.

Remembering that day brought a smile to his face as he remembered the simple joy that they'd had. His friend had seen it as an opportunity, and fairly dragged him out of the house. It had proved to be a blessing, as he could still feel the hugs he'd gotten from his little girl to show her love and thanks.

And he had plenty of thanks to give Genma. For a bit there, he had been looking towards throwing himself into his work so that his wife's death wouldn't have been in vain. However, the martial artist had shown him that there were other ways to deal with it. Heck, he'd even given him an example by giving up everything to focus on his son. The man had a wife and home waiting for him, and he'd still dedicated himself to his son, even with stopping to help a friend in need.

Having such an example had made him realise what was truly important. His wife might have been gone, but she had not only left him behind. There was Hotaru to consider, and she was a part of her mother that was still there.

So, he'd thrown himself into being the best father he could be, while limiting his research. He had always liked teaching anyway, and he knew that he had to be realistic in some things. There was too much at stake to be trying to prove all his previous theories. Other people could do that as he tried to focus on other avenues of study.

His family had a future, and he planned on seeing it.

As a result, he was doing research in other fields as he taught the future of science. He was content with that, and had made plans for things other than his next experiment. After all, somewhere out there, his only daughter's fiance was training and some day the boy would come back to a girl who showed no signs of forgetting him.

Shrugging to himself, he got up to scoop his daughter into his arms and carried her off to bed, feeling warm as she smiled in her sleep while:
