Since the appearance of the altered dogs, the technicians were finding all sorts of anomalies...
"What is going on in there?" the observer demanded.
The chief technician, Lucas William, was baffled. "We don't know sir! From what we can tell, it's happening all over the maze, though." He pointed to various screens...
One showed more of the dogs, only there were more with glowing eyes among them... and one of those was growing bigger...
In another location, the Alligator was also mutating again. It's scales were turning black, and its legs were elongating...
But most worrisome, were the rising number of cameras receiving nothing but static. That one or two might have been destroyed by accident, was expected. That six... now seven were out? Not possible for mindless beasts.
"As far as we can tell, sir, the Virus may have... mutated." William finished.
The observer scoffed, but with a tone of worry. "The T-Virus can't survive outside a host long enough to mutate! We designed it that way. And besides... how could a mutant T-Virus re-infect things already mutated by the T-Virus? Most of them are dead..."
"We don't know sir," William said simply, "And frankly, I don't want to know."
"Now, Lucas," the observer said, "we must explore this. The new mutation may have advantages we want to exploit."
"Sir!" William shouted. "I am not going to send my men in to that maze to get anything! You saw what those dogs did!! We don't have anything to deal with a living flame-thrower. And who knows what other variations are going to pop up! We aren't prepared to handle this..."
The observer shook his head. This could be his ticket to a promotion... vice-president even! He had to take this chance, and now... "Nonsense, Lucas, I have full confidence in your abilities..."
"Sir?" A voice over the intercom interrupted the conversation.
William turned and addressed it. "Yes?"
The voice sounded really shaky. You may want to check out Camera 9. And listen in to the Maze channel..."
Both William and the observer blinked, then looked at the appropriate camera. It was one of the zombie pens, used to hold the zombies not yet in the maze. But... all the zombies were just standing, instead of the constant shuffle they usually did...
William flipped on the Maze channel. A feminine voice rang out, speaking in Japanese. "Hello? Is anyone out there? Hello? Hello?"
William and the observer shared a glance. "Um..." his Japanese was rusty, but... "Yes? This who is?" William replied.
"We want to thank you." The voice said. William finally managed to track its owner down on the picture. A pretty Japanese woman, still wearing a dress. If it wasn't for the huge gash along her back, he'd have thought she was still alive...
"Thank us?"
"Yes. Thank you. You gave us life. Now you will give us freedom."
"I that can not do."
"You will. Whether you want to or not, you will. My children and I grow hungry, you see. These doors will not hold us. If you let us out now, I will be sure you are dead before we feed on you. If not, you will feel all the agonies of hell as we slowly devour your undying corpse..."
William was about ready to lose bladder control. "Escape you can not. There no way out is..."
"We will find a way. My children will free me. And I will free the King. And he shall deliver us all to the world, to devour and slaughter as much as we want. Your deaths can be merciful, if you help us now."
William's throat was dry, then he heard a choking sound. He turned, and saw the observer pale as he watched the screen. Looking at the screen himself, he understood why.
All the zombies there were now looking at the camera. All of them. And their eyes were glowing with the same light those dogs did.
"I am the Queen of the Dead." the speaker intoned again. "I command you to obey. Or suffer all the agonies of hell..."
"We can't let this breakthrough slip through our fingers, Lucas."
