"Ah, Saotome!" the raven-haired, middle-aged man who had just opened the main gate declared, a grin splitting his face as his eyes focused on Genma. "There you are!" The eyes turned to give the younger of the travelers a piercing gaze. "I see you brought Ranma."
"That I did, Tendou," Genma replied as he bowed to the host, and then he moved in to give Tendou Souun a hearty embrace. As soon as they pulled apart, Genma's smile vanished from his face. "Is it true?"
Hearing the question, Souun nodded, his eyes glistening with tears. "Hai, old friend, it's true! I..." A pause. "There was no choice."
"I see."
Ranma, who had remained respectfully silent while his father had reunited with his friend, then asked, "What's the matter?"
Both older men gazed on him. "It's best we go inside," Souun breathed out, the level of weariness in his voice rising several notches.
And with that, they headed toward the main house. As they went, Ranma's eyes began to scour the walled-in plot of land, his mind memorizing the defensive strengths and weaknesses of the Tendou property for future reference. His intent inspection didn't escape the attention of his sire and their host, though. "There's no need to do that, Ranma," Souun assured him. "This won't be the place where you'll reside."
Ranma gazed curiously at him. Before he could ask a question, though, the three had stepped into the house's genkan to remove their shoes. Once that was done, they stepped into the living room to see...
