Finally it was Lilac, the aged healer, who pronounced that this was a human transformed into a monstrous shape by some great evil.
Genma would have agreed if he spoke Chinese, so instead he merely tried to look as nonthreatening as he could. Which, considering his appearance, was still fairly nasty.
"ALERT!" cried one of the sentries, following that cry with the thrum of her bowstring as she sent arrow after arrow from her position atop one of the walls.
Some of the elders left off the examination of the monster to observe the streams of arrows that Xi was sending off.
"You're shooting at shadows and wind, child," rebuked Dao.
"Shadows and wind don't dodge," said Cologne with narrowed eyes.
Finally the shadow was struck, it reared up - a glistening formlessness briefly before becoming a spiky parody of a too-thin human form.
"Shit!" said Xi with considerable feeling, the fourteen year old feeling night-time terrors from her childhood returning to her.
"Prepare and gather torches, we'll have to encircle the village and keep them lit all night, otherwise those will get in - and I don't want to see the results of that," said Cologne as the shadowy form seemed to melt and merge with other shadows.
"Y-you heard the elder," said Dao, pale and shaking. Evil magic that could transform flesh? Shadows come to life? "Anyone not on guard duty, gather torches."
The group had done a number of things to narrow the field.
Finally it was decided who would end up as Ranma's "retainer".
Who herself was not unhappy about the situation, but wondering how to bring up the concept in terms that the young man would be able to understand.
Felicia wasn't sure why the young man seemed to get nervous around her, but noted it was so.
Deedlit, Saturn, and Pirotess all objected immediately to the thought of Morrigan spending large amounts of time alone with Ranma.
So it was decided that Honey would be the one to do it. She had the advantage of her limited shapeshifting abilities - and so could fit into a number of roles and situations that many of those present could not.
Not that there weren't some objections to the pairing, but most of those present were able to suppress such concerns as Honey was extremely unlikely to do anything improper. As opposed to Morrigan who viewed naughty as among the major food groups and therefore deserving of a daily helping.
"I wonder where Pop is," grumbled Ranma, still wandering about and looking for the vanished father.
"I'm not sure, Ranma-sama," said Honey. "However -"
