He had to return. Even though it had been twenty years and he utterly despised the thought of seeing the traitors again, he had sworn to protect the innocent. He would uphold that oath no matter the cost to himself, even though he did not see any of them as innocent. He had not since his exile here.
To say that he was much changed was an understatement on all levels. He had to grow up again, as he'd been reduced to the body of a five year-old, but with his memories and abilities intact. It had, strangely, eliminated both the curse and the Cat Fist. Perhaps that was appropriate, because they were marks of a person who no longer really existed.
His power grew and grew, and soon he was at the maximum of his inherent power, which was vast, but insufficient for this task. So he opened the Void within, increasing his powers immeasurably further.
As his power rose, his perception deepened. Soon he could see in his mind the walls between realities. It was possible, though immensely difficult, to perceive what he was searching for. As years had passed and he grew up for a second time, the day-to-day memories vanished, and only the harshest ones remained. This made it still more difficult to concentrate. If he messed up, he would be stranded wherever he arrived for at least two weeks, and perhaps longer. That wouldn't do, but it would be fact he could not fight, if it occurred. So it would have to be accepted, or perhaps resigned to.
The ground buckled and cracked underneath him. He perceived bright light around him and he hoped that his friends had turned away and covered their eyes. Vaguely he could tell that he was not giving off heat, only light.
A Rift opened in the sky, and with a great leap, he jumped through. The ground underneath him exploded as he jumped, but it was of no consequence to him -- he had gone.
