Tokyo Archmage-SM: Different styles [Episode 116270]

by Kestral

Ranma well knew there were different approaches to the Weave, and that his was the style that offered the widest range and versatility of spells.

Wizardry - books and tomes, allowing one to pick and choose one's arsenal. There was a wide variety of spells available, and while some of the spell components were hard to acquire, their casting was mainly a matter of knowledge and will.

Clericism - white magic, good for healing and protection mainly. It also required the whims of some extraplanar being.

Druidism - an offshoot of clericism, restricted mainly to nature-oriented spells.

Sorcery - wizardry without the books. One instead had a restricted number of spells but knew them intimately and could access them on the fly.

Bardic Magic - the magic's in the music. Took a while and was reliant on having an instrument.

Dynamic Sorcery - something practiced in his own world. The magic followed different rules, and was usually through a gimmick of some kind. He'd heard of wands, cards, crystals, pendants, and rings. There was talk of those who didn't use such things but used an innate power - but it sounded like more typical sorcery to Ranma.

Psi - the powers of the mind. Ranma thought that if he hadn't gone into wizardry that this would have been his other major choice. Adaptable but drew on inner sources of power. The main problem was that it didn't reach the level of power or versatility that wizardry did.

Then of course there was this whole "magical girl" stuff. From what he could see it required a magical powerup to clear the channels for magical force, then the girl in question had access to at most two or three spells but they could probably put quite a lot of power into those spells.

Ranma stuck his head up. Something was happening in his forest?

"AH!" Ryoga exclaimed, jumping backwards and eyes bugged out.

"Welcome to Caesinoposs, my lord," said the woman, seemingly extruding herself from the wood. "I am Elan, hamadryad and spirit of the wood."

Ryoga dropped the warding gesture as this woman's appearance penetrated. Her skin was as light as the willow tree she'd stepped out of, her hair a long silken waterfall the color of grass, her eyes the color of a clear sky. She was also not dressed. "C-c-c-can you put something on?"

The woman gave a disappointed sound. "Fine. Is this better?"

Ryoga snuck a look back, relieved at the woman now wearing a yukata. "So you're a tree spirit? Wow. You're much prettier than Totoro."

"A 'totoro'?" asked the tree spirit.

"A movie I saw," said Ryoga. "I think it was in Osaka. Or was it Kyoto?"

"So, my lord, is there something... you need?" asked the woman, smiling and trying not to look too eager. "Anything at all?"

"Well, I could use directions," allowed Ryoga. "Which way to Tokyo?"

"You just arrived, my lord," protested Elan. "You just summoned me, and now you want to leave again?"

"I summoned you? How did I... THAT?" Ryoga was aghast.

"You watered my tree," said Elan. "Even though there's plenty of water here in the mage's lands, and it's going to give me some Ph problems, it was sufficient to get my notice."

"Ghak," said Ryoga, damn near mortally embarassed.

"My lord, I only have other fae to speak with, and few mortals walk this path. Will you not tarry a bit with me?" asked the hamadryad, looking over that severely toned body and imagining the paces she could put the boy through. Elan was of the decided opinion that all human boys should tarry with the nymphs a few times - it would be a good educational experience and when the boys eventually left they'd have skills to make their mortal girlfriends very very happy indeed.

"T-t-t-t-tarry?!" squeaked Ryoga, telling himself he was just imagining things. That heavy-lidded gaze. The way the woman's tongue ever so slowly traced her lips. The way that summery kimono (yukata) seemed to have become a little loose in the top and had obviously never been designed to hold against that kind of shape.

"Yes, my lord," said Elan, moving closer. Just a little closer. Poor boy looked frightened. It might take awhile to seduce him, but Elan thought it likely that once she had succeeded it would do the poor child a great deal of good and he wouldn't be averse to further lessons.
