"It was you wasn't it?" a boy about her age said.
"It was me," Kodachi said, blinking. "That did what?" She didn't remember doing anything to attract attention...yet.
"You're the one that hung up Malfoy's goons on the chandelier." the boy said.
Kodachi blinked and then remembered. Apparently dealing with people as such was looked upon as unordinary. She'd have to be careful about it then. She did release her breath in relief, however.
"Oh, yes," she said. "They were attempting to give me some injury."
"How'd you do it?" he asked. "What spell did you use?"
"Spell?" Kodachi blinked. "I have not learned enough to consider using spells in such a situation. I shall wait until having a few classes for that."
"You beat them without magic?" the boy said, surprised.
"They are quite untrained," Kodachi said, feeling a little self-conscious now as several of the younger Slytherins were huddling around her and listening.
"Untrained, what do you mean by that?" a girl asked.
"Why, the Art of course," Kodachi said. "Rythmic gymnastics martial arts. A mere sport form, admittedly, but of some limited use if applied correctly in battle."
"You mean you're like a ninja on one of them muggle TV shows?" somebody asked with a small degree of awe.
"Errr..." Kodachi said. "No. Gymnastic martial arts, not ninjitsu."
Normally she'd respond by giving an insulted speech about the difference between samurai and ninja, disregarding those ninja clans that were also samurai. The circumstances were far from what she was used to, however. She was in a foreign country, admittedly in place where her family was regarded with honor, starting unfamiliar studies and finally free of her worrying about her brother appearing around every corner. She was also quite a bit younger in body, an added leash to her ego. Added to this that Kodachi was unused to people huddling around her without her forcing them to.
Kodachi was quite nervous on this, her first day.
"Oh well," the speaker said, a second year student she recognized by the dress robe. "Be quite a sight to see you once you've been here a few years. Maybe we'll even have a seeker for a team that doesn't spend more time laughing at the other team than he does looking for the snitch."
There was some quiet snickering about that, until someone noticed Draco looking in their direction and the chattering calmed down a moment.
"Could you explain better what you mean, by 'seeker' and 'snitch'?" she asked.
"Oh right," someone said. "You're from Japan aren't you, I'll bet they're called something different there. You know Quidditch, right?"
She didn't, but nodded hesitantly anyway. What followed was a thorough explanation of quidditch, as the speaker assumed he'd have to explain every term to her. Which he did, but not for the reasons he thought he had to.
"What can you tell me about Harry Potter?" she asked at some point after he his name.
"Oh, Potter," the second year said with rolling eyes. His name was Eric Garnet and he was a thin boy with sallow skin and stringy brown hair. "If it weren't for Potter we'd have beaten Gryffindor's quidditch team last year. Even with a bludger tampered with to chase only him, Malfoy let him get the snitch."
"A worthy adversary then?" Kodachi asked.
"A right pain in the neck," Eric said loudly. Then he shifted his eyes aroound and quietly leaned forward. "Though he did stop those attacks last year. And I hear some dark wizard tried to bring Him back the year before and Potter stopped that."
"Really?" Kodachi said.
Kodachi was intrigued, but cautioned herself. She had no desire to get into a situation like that she had in Nerima. Besides, she only appeared to be an eleven year old girl, who should be interested in her. No, it seemed to her that Harry was quite interested in her as a friend at least. That was better than risking turning him away with any childish crush that she might develop. It was useful, for avoiding embarrassing situations, to have seventeen years of experience in an eleven year-old body.
Kodachi was very interested in pitting her skills against Harry, however. She'd have to warn him ahead of time, of course, just to be polite and let him know there was no hostility intended.
