Not only did little Ami know about the boy, he was her brother?!
Not only that, but he had a room there? One decorated with posters of martial artists and textbooks and art books, but definitely male and young - with clothes just the right size for the boy.
The two knew SOMETHING was going on, but other than each other and a boy whose memories seemed fragmented - nobody else remembered that Ami was a lone child. Every phone call the increasingly agitated pediatrician put through revealed that Ranma Mizuno was their little boy, by adoption. He'd been found a few years back and was two years older than little Ami, adopted and brought into the family because of the odd circumstances of that finding.
The wandering artist and the pediatrician also watched over the boy, each trying to figure out the mystery that had just wandered into their lives.
A Grue is a Thing Which Is Not. Since they gathered in groups, that made them Things Which Are Not. Which would be perfectly acceptable if it weren't for that little addition of being Hungry Things Which Are Not. These things are found between dimensions, in the spaces between universes, which is a place That Is Not. What they hunger for and devour fell into the category of That Which Exists, or perhaps more properly - Existence itself.
Genma managed to attract some Grue and they ate him.
Genma Saotome ceased to exist at that moment, his very existence being devoured before the connection cut and the Grue were yanked back to the Not Place that spawned them.
The changes went forward and back.
Genma Saotome had now never existed.
Had Ranma Saotome been alone, he would have faded away much as the pictures and legacies of Genma Saotome were now fading away. Instead, he was being watched by people who were very intent on the young boy thrashing about in some fever. Especially as the boy seemed to fade at several points.
Something was very wrong, but perception counted in this instance and against this malady. The very fact that people were keeping track of young Ranma meant that he existed.
Reality jostled and closed together around the space and time that had once held Genma Saotome.
Now Ranma was simply Ranma. No last name given. A runaway from an unmarried mother whose identity was unknown.
In fact, Nodoka was alive and well, and had had a child from some wandering martial artist she'd met. Or so she remembered the occasion. It had been quite scandalous, and her child had been taken away at one point. She now worked the cash register at a sex toys shop, and made enough money to get by. Finding her child at this point was a dream that she couldn't quite afford at present.
Ranma stabilized during the night, and it was a slightly different Ranma due to something other than Genma's genetic makeup at work.
