With Ranma's adaptive ability present it was tested by someone who had THAT skill, and he was judged to be quite powerful within the narrow range of his ability.
It was theorized that if he were thrown into outer space, his body would adapt by throwing him into suspended animation or spinning a coccoon around itself.
If he spent time in the water, he adapted. He didn't breathe water, but he could hold his breath a long time and swim really well. Sometime during his convalescence his skin started producing an oil that kept it from drying out after being submerged for a long period.
This was noted by all concerned, as well as the potential usefulness of his Talent. It had its limits to be sure, but now Ranma Saotome had another quality which had some regarding him with certain speculations.
The boy's mother was certainly amenable to some of these designs, and as she now had the say about his disposition - was inclined to exercise her authority.
