Interstellar Space - Roughly In The Direction Of Wolf 424 - Heading: Sol - ETA: .13 Terran Days
The mood aboard the Doroume was slightly nervous. Sightly, in the way you could probably cut it with a dull butter knife.
Nine and one-third hours ago the FNA fleet had detected the ion trail emitted by a ship using the Hyperlight method of travel. This was the FTL drive used by both the Conglomerate and the Empire, an analysis of which determined it to be Salusian in origin.
Their nervousness was understandable. If the Salusians had gotten to Earth before they did, and had claimed it as part of their territory, it meant that the Conglomerate was attempting to surround the space of the Four Nations Alliance.
Scans of the surrounding region turned up nothing, which was good. The usual methods of both Zardon and Salusia in claiming new space was to send in an occuping force to solidify its position. With no signs of recent large scale Hyperlight movements in the vicinity it remaine a possibility that the trail was only left by a scout or exploration ship.
Still, the discovery had prompted Fleet Captain Dom to order all ships to increase speed to their drives maximum operational limit. It had been done, but not without a large amount of complaints from the engineering crew about engine stress. The result being that their ETA was now significantly decreased.
"Helmsman," queried Dom. "How long until we reach the Earth's star system?"
The flagship's chief navigator, a Silgrian, looked back from his station. "Aproximately three hours and twelve minutes, Captain."
Dom nodded in reply.
The Four Nations Alliance was fast becoming an inaccurate name. Despite starting out as an alliance between the Raalgon, Ctarl-Ctarl, Amarans, and Atlanteans, two other races had since become part of the FNA in order to help protect themselves from the seemingly perpetual Zardon/Salusia affair. This was sort of a problem, as the FNA Treaty only provided for the original four members.
These two races, the feline Kryn and reptilian Silgrians, were starting to demand the rewritting of the treaty to include themselves. Since such a revision would be a monumentus undertaking, as well as the fact that another race, the Corbonites, were also leaning towards membership, the FNA delegates were attempting to stall for time to prepare. They weren't really getting anywhere though, and it was becoming increasingly obvious that severe changes in the structure of the Alliance would soon have to be made.
'I just hope,' thought Dom. 'that we aren't too late.'
