Which was why Ash/Ranma was helping with the various pokegirls that the Professor had. Besides, it never hurt to get in good graces with the teacher. In Ash's philosophy anyway. Ranma had never seen the point.
The physical labor was what Ranma most wanted out of it, and there was a fair amount to do. Normally what Ash would have volunteered to do was lighter work, such as repair and cleaning of the pokeballs and the various instruments. Digging a new irrigation ditch and putting in fenceposts was different, which both surprised and pleased the Professor.
Then there was the Machine, which Ash had only seen in passing before but which the Professor was working on even now. It was part of the alien technology, some of it from Von Daniken and other parts from the Hancock Plateau. Like all of the alien equipment found, there were no straight lines - everything was smoothly curved and flowing shapes. It mixed biotechnology with other things that even the Professor barely understood. The only sharp angles involved were the parts that had been developed by human technology, which were the interfaces.
Ash still didn't get to deal with it. The Professor seemed to think he was accident-prone and wanted him kept away from it.
Ash then got a chance to feed the pokegirls currently being studied by the Professor. They were somewhat dangerous, so he didn't get too close.
