Marko had known this moment would come - he'd known it for months, and dreaded it. Three months ago, after his previous charge's funeral, he'd been placed on placed on suspension in order to let him get himself straightened out again. And then they'd offered him another chance.
To be honest, he had considered bowing out. He wasn't sure he could handle watching another little girl waste away, her memories slowly eroding. Angelique had lost all her memories not once, but twice - first during the inital reconstruction, and later after an "update" had been inserted into the conditioning. It was quite likely that was what had killed her, in the end - not just the repeated messing with her head, but his inability to accept her again afer she lost her memories. Once the girls had accepted and imprinted on their partners, the conditioning wouldn't go away, and couldn't be rewritten.
Steeling himself, Marko walked up to the observation window. On the other side, just as the last time, was a little girl on life support. There was no out, now - he'd seen the girl. Face half burnt off, both legs missing from the knees, and an empty left sleeve. From his notes, he knew that her internals were held together at the moment with about a million stitches, and half of them were missing.
She'd been in a train crash, or so the story went - sole survivor in her car, and given her age and the lack of inquiry about her for so long, it was assumed that her family had been on the train as well. Fingerprints had turned up nothing, nor hade genetical profiling - not that they'd expected to find anything there with so young a girl. There was the possibility that she'd been a part of a touristing family - despite natural red hair, she had almost all the markers of full-blood Japanese ancestry, but that didn't neccessarily mean anything.
The doctor interrupted his brooding with a hand on his shoulder.
"Have you decided?" the older man asked gently.
Marko gave a slow nod. "Her name will be... Ranko. Wild Child."
