Ranma may have underestimated Cologne's battleskill in the face of his powers, but her presence had thrown his mind back to operating in martial artist mode while she was going all out. For her part, Cologne had three thousand years of martial arts lore behind her, but none of that dealt with handling mutants. Few of her ancestors had ever encountered mutants in their remote mountain village. She could sense faint threads of ki in his energy blasts, as he used his training to control his power, and she had judged them by that.
She managed to get passed Ranma's defenses and strike his paralysis point. That should had ended the fight, but the pressure points beneath her fingers felt wrong somehow. Thus Cologne learned her first lesson in mutant anatomy: however outwardly similiar mutants may look to other humans their mutation often added a unique twist to their metabolism.
Ranma's power was light and darkness held in balance. His training gave him a level of control most new mutants required months of intensive training to even begin to match. But disrupting that control in the heat of battle could be dissasterous, as Cologne discovered mere moments after she felt his chakra shift unexpectedly beneath her probing fingers.
Suddenly she was confronted by pure Darkforce untainted by controlling flows of ki and unrestrained by a guiding conscience. As the unguided tendrils speared out from the point she had tapped, Cologne found herself unable to anticipate their wild movement and unable to deflect their erratic slices.
Seconds later, Shampoo's eyes had recovered enough to watch as her beloved elder was enguffed by the darkness. The elder's voice cried out in untold agony then was suddenly silenced. She felt the shock of a strong lifeforce suddenly snuffed out like a candle. And the darkness continued to spread.
Seeing that was all the warning Millia needed. Training as a team required a certain familiarity with each other's powers and the X-Men had records of numerous encounters with Darkforce wielders. The girls trusted Ranma to keep control, but were well aware of the consequences if he ever lost it. She fled.
Half a world away, Professor X strained Cerebro's capacitors as he attempted to reach into Ranma's mind to lend the much needed balance. Not for the first time the mind that could reach across a galaxy wished that a reformed Magneto had reversed the interferrence he'd placed in Earth's magnetic feild.
