The years had not been kind to the book and most people would have ignored it as trash in its present condition. Dirty and torn with part entirely rotten away it was lying among other refuse in the alley. How many people might have walked by this font of wisdom because of its outer appearance nobody could possibly say.
But one young girl did not walk by. Perhaps nobody had ever told her about not picking up things from the dirt; there were many gaps in her education. She must have seen that it was some kind of instruction manual on human sexuality judging by one of the loose pages that was peeking out of the book. The girl had an eye for small details like that. And as it happened, this was exactly the sort of thing that she could use right now.
Rei carefully arranged the remains of the book on her bed. The title was no longer legible, but she had been right, it was an instruction manual and it appeared to be old. The commander had imparted on her the importance of the knowledge of the ancients. And this appeared to fall into the category.
Rei had begun to realize her deficiencies in this area some time ago. The talk in the locker room and some of the crude jokes she overheard made it obvious to her, that there was far more to human sexuality than the simple biological functions she was familiar with.
Until recently she had not considered this to be important. Her research suggested that it was primarily something that came up when interacting with people of the same general age-group in a social manner. Rei did not care to interact with her fellow pupils at school as it was not necessary for her mission. The only people she had to interact with were those at NERV and only the relationship to the commander was required to be a close one.
That was until recently. But now with the other pilots in the picture she would need to interact with them. The closer they were to her the better they would be able to succeed as a team.
Rei had not wanted to brother the commander with such minor issues and she did not feel... comfortable discussing this with doctor Akagi. She had planned to figure things out on her own as she proceeded, but now thanks to the manual she would be able accomplish her goal far more efficiently.
