Usagi was still on her bed, looking at the Splicing catalog, when her communicator went off.
"Hello," she answered absently. In the lulls between invasions, the communicator system was used to save cell phone minutes, so she continued reading. Perhaps a fox. . .
"Usagi," Michiru's worried voice came from the device, "have you seen Hotaru?"
"Nope," Usagi answered cheerfully, glad the question had nothing to do with a violin bow and bubble gum.
"Hotaru did something rash, and we reacted badly," Michiru said, pausing to choose her words carefully. Was that Haruka saying something about a freak in the background?
"Apparently she became so frustrated with her weak constitution that she forged our signatures and got Spliced."
"Really?" Usagi asked, "and it made her better?"
"If you call being some dog-thing better," Haruka groused.
"Well, it's good that she's healthy now, right?"
Michiru sighed. "It's not that simple, Usagi. Haruka and I investigated using Splicing when it first came out. No one knows how Splicing affects prepubescent girls. She might grow extra sets of breasts, or she might have seasonal heats instead of periods. Not to mention the mental changes."
"Mental changes?" Usagi squeaked. Maybe Splicing wasn't such a good idea . . .
"One of the original researchers got Spliced with an alligator and was run out of the United States because he kept eating people's pets. He just couldn't help himself," Michiru explained.
"Can you imagine our little girl fetching everything some passerby throws?" Haruka growled.
"Not to mention how it might affect Hotaru as she starts noticing boys,"Michiru continued as if her lover hadn't spoken. "She might just start looking at the neighborhood pets instead of their owners."
Usagi made a queasy face; from her tone, Michiru was making a face of her own.
"So you want me to talk to Hotaru?" Usagi asked.
"Thank you," Michiru said, relieved.
"Even if she won't listen to her parents, she'll change back if her Princess tells her to stop being a freak," Haruka enthused.
"I didn't say I'd do that," Usagi protested, "I mean, I'll tell her why you're so concerned and everything, and that you love her and that's why you're so upset and all, but maybe Hotaru doesn't care about all that stuff that might happen, as long as she isn't so weak."
"Princess!" Michiru protested.
"Haruka, Michiru, I'm your friend and I'm Hotaru's friend," Usagi explained, "and I'm your Princess, and I really want all of you to be happy and have wonderful lives, but I'm not stupid enough to get in the middle of a family squabble."
