Hogwarts, Oh My!: Gryffindor! [Episode 123393]

by Arthur Hansen

"Hmm. What a fascinating mind," the hat muttered quietly. "Quite the mind you've got there. Plenty of cunning and quite brave. Very loyal too. And a desire to prove yourself. Where should I put you?"

Harriet thought of her friend. Gryffindor! So she could be with her friend!

"Are you sure? That's a very loyal thing?" it muttered again. "Ah, well. If you are sure! Gryffindor!" the Sorting Hat shouted loudly.

There was a smattering of applause as Harriet took her place at the Gryffindor table. She held her breath until "Granger, Hermione" was sorted into Gryffindor. She really had not wanted to lose her new friend. Harriet bounced up to give her friend a hug and open up a seat next to her.

"I think it wanted to put me in Hufflepuff for a moment! Thought I was being loyal because we wanted to be in the same house!" Harriet whispered.

"It really wanted to put me into Ravenclaw, but finally decided that Gryffindor was for me," Hermione confided back.

"Hello! I'm Lavender Brown!" another first year girl said for introduction. Harriet and Hermione responded in kind.

"And I'm Parvati Patil!" a girl who looked like she had a bit of Indian blood in her.

All of the new students were wowed and in awe when scrumptious food started appearing in different bowls and platters. The four girls were pretty grossed out by Ron's method of eating everything in site. He barely even closed his mouth.

"Yeah. My sister got sorted into Ravenclaw," Parvati was explaining. "Her name is Padme."

"Weird. So you are identical twins and never been separated before?" Harriet asked. "I think I'd be scared."

Parvati leaned over to her. "I am, a little. But I'm not a little girl any more. We've known that it might happen. Padme is a bit smarter. Though I think I've got a better personality!" she said with a smile.

Harriet and Hermione just laughed at that. They quickly finished up their supper and listened to the warnings that Professor Dumbledore announced (Funny name, that, Harriet had whispered to Hermione.) Harriet was one of the few people laughing at the warning of death for violating the 3rd floor hall.

"He was joking, right?" Harriet asked Janet Woodsmelth, the female Prefect that she had been introduced to earlier. The other Prefect was a pompous boy that she disliked almost instantly.

"No, not about that sort of thing," Janet said timidly. "I don't know why he did not tell us about it though." She nervously twisted her dull brown hair.

After that horrid song (that all the girls thought should be banned) they were led all the way up to the portrait of the Fat Lady and given the password. Janet showed them their dormitory and the gigantic four poster beds that the girls dived onto to start bouncing.

"I've always wanted a bed like this!" Lavender almost screamed, she was so happy.

"I can't believe these beds!" Harriet called out happily.

Their dorm was a round room, with the four afore mentioned beds. Their trunks were already delivered. They filled their wardrobes and unfolded their clothes. Hermione took over a shelf to put all of her books (her light reading, as she put it). Lavender managed to show them an unwrinkling charm on their clothes. An old pot-metal stove sat in the middle of the room. It was all tastefully decorated, with just a touch of ruffles here and there.

Harriet was rummaging in her trunk when she felt something in a cloth bag. "Oh! That gag gift that someone gave me for my birthday," she exclaimed.

Parvati looked over in surprise. "It looks like an Oujia Board."

Harriet giggled. "It's supposed to be a 'Love Fortune Teller Board.'"

Lavender bounded onto Harriet's bed. "Ooh! We can play with that tonight! Even if it isn't real! Come on, Hermione!"

The bushy-haired girl looked over seriously. "I have to study!"

Harriet walked over and grabbed Hermione and dragged her over to her own bed. "You can study later! We haven't been assigned anything yet!"

"But I want to study!" Hermione whined. She didn't really struggle too hard though.

"You go first Harriet!" Parvati sad loudly. She seemed to think this was a grand adventure.

Harriet pulled out the board and the little focus. A piece of paper drifted out of the bad. She grabbed it and read the instructions. "Ooh! Gross! It says I have to prick my finger, put the blood on the board and tap it with my wand!?"

Parvati and Lavender suddenly looked very serious. "Maybe we shouldn't mess with it," Lavender said seriously. "It might be cursed."

"Do you think so?" the Girl Who Lived asked worriedly.

Parvati pursed her lips in thought. "No. Not really. But it might be real divination."

Hermione's mouth opened in an 'O' of astonishment. "Divination is real?"

Lavender and Parvati shared a quick look at each other. Divination was real, if not really reliable.

"I'm going to try it!" Harriet exclaimed. She pulled a pocket knife out of her trunk and pricked her finger and dropped a single point onto the board. With a careful tap of her wand, the blood sparked bright red and burned off the board.

"Ooooooooh!" all the girls said in awe.

"The instructions say that I can't just ask 'who', I have to ask it 'about' my true love," the raven-haired girl said. "What should I ask?"

"Are you destined for true love?" Parvati said with a squeal. The other two girls thought that was a very good question.

The little lens slid across the board to reveal 'yes'. Without Harriet touching it.

"I'm destined for true love? What does that mean?" she asked with an excited squeal of joy.

"True love is the most special of love. I heard that Harry Potter's mother loved him so much that You Know Who couldn't kill him," Lavender said in a hushed whisper.

Harriet gulped suddenly. "Voldemort? Really?" she asked, her voice cracking with emotion. Luckily, the other girls didn't realize why.

"Don't say that name!" Lavender nearly shouted.

"When will you meet your true love?" Parvati suddenly spouted.

Harriet dutifully asked the board. It focused onto the word... "Today."

They all stared at that in shock, then looked over at the clock next to Lavender's bed.

"It's late! You aren't going to meet anyone else! You've already met you true love?" Hermione exclaimed.

They all stared at the board with more wonder.
