Friends in a Foreign Land [Episode 1242]

"Hai," Ranma said, bowing formally to the other girl as she did. "I am Saotome Ranma, I was told to contact you. I did not expect to be contacted."

"Well," Amy said. "Gotham is a place where one should cultivate whatever friends they can. It can be dangerous here." Ranma nodded.

"I have witnessed that," Ranma agreed. She paused for a moment and then stepped aside to invite Amy in. "My apologies, I should not keep you on the doorstep like this."

Amy watched curiously as the pleasant girl step aside to politely let her through as she entered the house.

"Is something the matter?" Ranma asked as she closed the door and followed Amy to where the girl sat at the table in one of those chairs. Ranma hesitated a moment before doing likewise, looking mildly uncomfortable in the chair.

"Well," Amy said hesitantly. "I don't mean to be rude, but with a name like Ranma..." She trailed off for a moment.

"Ah," the redhead said, realizing where this was going. "You expected me to be a tomboy at the very least."

"Well, yes," Amy admitted.

"My parents were expecting a boy," Ranma said. "And registered me before I turned out to be a girl." It was true on its face.

"Oh, that explains it, then," Amy said, though she thought you had to wait for a child to be born to register them. She looked around the building for a moment. "Where are your bags? Perhaps I can help you unpack. This place is dreadfully bare, but I'm sure you have plenty with you that can change that."

"My bag was lost," Ranma said calmly, hopefully implying that it was lost in the airport. There was no need to dwell on that theft anymore.

"Oh dear!" Amy said. "That's terrible! Are you going to be okay until your first payment comes in?" Ranma nodded.

"Pennyworth-san was kind enough to give me some money," Ranma said. "Perhaps you can guide me to some places to shop, however? If you know anywhere to buy a kimono?"

"Well, of course I can show you around," Amy said in a mildly scolding manner. "And kimonos shall not be a problem, they have been something of a fad among some women of late."

Ranma frowned at that, wondering if they'd be real kimonos, or if she was going to find some imitation.

"They are good quality," Amy assured her. "Come on, it has been forever since I went shopping with a friend."

"May I ask what your avenue of study is, Mizuno-san?" Ranma asked.

"Please, Ranma-san," Amy said. "Call me Amy. And you may ask. I'm studying to be doctor, and perhaps a computer programmer. You?"

"I plan to study medicine as well," Ranma said. "Physics, probability, and psychology."

"Really?" Amy said. "Planning to study the occult as well?"

"Yes," Ranma said simply. "I acquired an interest in magic and myth rather early in life."

"I see," Amy said. And with that they collected themselves to go shopping.

The next day...
