Born at a time of ill tiding, under stars of ill tiding, during events of ill tiding, Moroboshi-san walked through the world surrounded by creatures and forces perilous to the bodies and souls of humanity. The Grandmaster of Indiscriminate Grappling and Groping was a playful and teasing sort, who enjoyed leading women on a merry chase. Ataru was more of a predator who wanted to do the chasing. Women who encountered Ataru and became part of his games were left satisfied, but they were used and used hard in the process.
The difference that most of the Moroboshi tales revolved around was the way in which Happosai and Moroboshi both had roles in helping women become better slaves. Happosai did this by opening his school for girls in the wake of the Furinkan baby boom, along with his frequent appearances around town to brighten a woman’s day and provide a little instruction.
Ataru was more tamer than trainer. He had proven himself by bringing a number of dangerous creatures and at least one amazon warrior under his control and his brand. Many attributed this to a desire for personal slaves that could keep going under his unrelenting attentions. Somewhere along the way, his talents and those strange twists of fate that surrounded him had placed him in control of a slave-auction company that specialized in correcting problem cases, including an occasional hostile or rambunctious non-human.
Thus the tales told by candlelight at countless slumber parties focused on what happened to bad slaves who were sent to his dungeons. He was the boogieman that parents threatened children with. “Better behave or Moroboshi will take you.” Intellectually, Makoto had known the stories must be exaggerated, but on a gut level she had been expecting chambers of horrors. Room after room of women moaning and screaming and begging as they were suspended from the ceiling or strapped to horrible devices and tormented by laughing oni without mercy.
