As Hotaru read her grandfather's journal, she read of his life and adventures, starting with his forced redemption from the life of Crime Lord Ying Ko to his retirement in the early 1970s. The adventure that caught her attention was against the descendant of Ghengis Khan and his attempt to conquer New York City. As she read of his struggles mind-vs.-mind against Khan, she had the feeling that there was something more to the story than just the words. Her eyes were drawn to the ornate decorative border of each page. The swirling red, gold and blue border seemed to draw her along it to the upper center of the border, where an oval of a pearly substance was inset into the thick parchment of the page.
Hotaru felt like she was falling into that oval. To anyone else, it would look like she in a trance looking at the page. In her trance, she heard a gravelly male voice talking to her from everywhere yet from nowhere. "Only one of my blood could open this book. Only one of my spirit could hear this message. Daughter of my Spirit, you have shown that you have the strength of spirit to understand my power and to learn it for yourself."
With that, it felt as if she had been blind her whole life yet now could suddenly see. Images that were both symbolical and allegorical filled her mind, only to seem to fade into the background of her mind. She didn't know how, but Hotaru felt that there were now abilities she was granted that she did not have before.
"Daughter of my Spirit, I have opened abilities that you have possessed from birth yet have remained dormant until now. I encourage you to exercise your powers; the means to do so you can now read in my journal. Above all, remember: The Shadow Knows."
With that, the voice faded and Hotaru found herself back in her room, laying on her bed reading her grandfather's journal. Yet she could also feel that things had changed. As she re-read the journal, she found the mental exercises her grandfather's spirit had encoded in the ornate border of the journal. As she focused inwards to work with her awakened powers...
