He could see them whenever he closed his eyes, beckoning to him, welcoming him home. His friends, his family, his allies, even his petty rivals. They were all dead now, had been for a while actually, but he had finally finished killing the monster who had taken them from him. The fight had cost him much - and now it was costing him his life, as the last of his energy was draining out of him like air out of a holed beach ball.
As he laid there flat on his back in the middle of the field where the final showdown had taken place, his mind held only one conscious thought: he wished he could do it over. With all the knowledge and all the skills he had had this day at his disposal, he would have been able to nip this disaster in the bud, without the conflict inflicting such a monstrous loss of life. If only....
And then it was over, and the darkness took him.
As the wind rustled the tall grass surrounding the young human's body, a shaft of light struck down from the heavens, followed by two more. When they faded, they left three women standing there, looking at the man with tears in their eyes. His had been a sad tale, they knew, because they had seen it all without being able to help. It should never have come to pass in the first place, but their intervention while the Great Enemy was still active would have had dire consequences. Only now, after it was finally over, could they begin to set things right. Starting by fulfilling that dying wish.
And so, with one voice, the great Norns Urd, Belldandy and Skuld intoned:
"Wish Granted."
And the world was remade.
