“Really? Most of the other guys say it’s the fact that you can look all you want but you can’t touch anything,” said a kid wearing headphones, with a dreamy look and a goofy grin on his face. Ranma looked at him as if he was crazy.
"Are you kidding? I was Ranma Saotome. I got groped when I said No! point-blank, and any touching on MY part woulda got me seriously killed even faster than I managed to get any- HEY!! You hear me!" he said, surprised. The kid grinned goofily.
“Yeah, and I can see you too!” he added, sheepishly. Ranma would have sweatdropped if he were both alive and in a normal state of mind, but he was shocked by the fact that somebody, at all, could hear him!
“You… how…” he sputtered.
“Oh, that’s just paranormalism,” the boy explained, in the previous tone, as if that was the most common thing in the world. “I’m still beginning training here, but I’d say that you’re quite interesting, for a spirit.”
Ranma felt, subconsciously, tears forming on his eyes (despite that not being the truth), and rubbed his index finger over them to stop himself from crying. “What… what are you?”
The boy smiled. “Pleased to meet you. My name is Yoh Asakura.”
“THAT DIDN’T ANSWER ANYTHING!!!” Ranma screamed, enraged, before sighing. “What I meant is, how can you have this ability? It’s something impossible! No normal human has it!”
“Well… That’s because I’m not a normal human,” Yoh explained. “I am a Shaman, the one to connect this world to the other world.”
“A… Shaman?”
“Yeah. Shamans are people who can channel the inner energy most things have, mostly through the use of spirits. There are other means of doing so, but the one my family specializes in is spirit command.”
“Ah…” Ranma replied, not having understood a word. Still, he thought that some of it sounded, at the very least, familiar. He floated down, approaching the seat.
“Hey, when you said you can channel this ‘inner energy’… do you mean ki?” he asked, finally having found some connection.
Yoh took a thoughtful look. “Well, in a way, it is, but it’s not really my own. It’s more like a mix between the spirit’s and the Shaman’s. Also, depending on how it’s used, the Shaman might drain the spirit’s energy reserves without spending much of his own.”
“Ah. So, it’s sort like ki-using martial arts, only you don’t need to spend so much ki?” Ranma was getting interested. Okay, so he wouldn’t be able to use that sort of thing, because of the fact that he was dead. Still, it was a talk for a change.
“Yeah, I guess so. You’re a martial artist?” Yoh asked, thinking about how cool it’d be to have a spirit like this one helping him on his training. He seemed to be pretty strong spiritually, even if he wasn’t much older than him (and by much older, we mean the apparent age).
“Yeah. I’m – I mean, was –” he said the last part almost disgusted, “the best martial artist from around here. But then I died and now I feel like I’m dying again from boredom. And all because I drowned, broke my head, or all my body. With my luck, it was probably all of them.”
“That’s strange. How long have you been dead?”
“Ten days.”
“That’s VERY strange.”
“Why?”
“I thought you were dead for a while. Those clothes are quite out of fashion.”
“…” Ranma’s jaw was hanging from the surprise at how Yoh had reacted. He hadn’t expected him to be so acceptant. And what was that about his clothes being out of fashion?
“Oh, well. Say, you want to leave? This movie is starting to get boring.” Ranma looked at Yoh. “Besides, I’d like to talk to you some more.” Ranma nodded and the two started making their way outside.
