Hogwarts, Oh My!: The Quidditch Star that wasn't [Episode 130549]

by Arthur Hansen

[Flashback to learning to ride a broom.]

"Cheer up, Neville! Brooms aren't that bad," Harriet whispered to him. "And they're like animals, so you have to project a good strong feeling of being in control. At least that's what Madam Hootch said last weekend."

All of the Gryffindor and Slytherin first years were lined up on the grounds, watching Ms. Hootch closely.

"All right, class. The first thing to do is to get your broom to get up into your hand. Now, firmly mind you, say 'up'." She then walked along the rows to make sure everyone was getting it.

Harriet smiled as Neville got his broom up on the third try. She turned back to the teacher to listen how to properly mount a broom. All of the Gryffindors laughed at Malfoy when he was told that he'd been doing it wrong.

Most of the class went without any major mishaps, although Ron and Neville did crash into each other. But only bruises came of that.

As they trudged back to their common rooms, Neville was bubbling with enthusiasm. "You were right, Harriet. I just told it like I would tell Trevor not to do something and it worked!"

Hermione nodded to herself. "So brooms are bewitched. So the more powerful a person's will is directed, the better the broom responds. I've been reading up on it a lot!"

Harriet laughed. "Next thing you know, Hermione will be signing up for Quidditch!"

"Not much danger of that for us. First years aren't allowed to have a broom, so we can't be on the Quidditch team," Ron groused. "Fred and George are on the team right now. They play Beaters. But our team isn't so good, from what they tell us. Haven't had a good Seeker in years." He sighed.

"Why the long face, Ron?" Harriet asked.

"I'd really like to play on our house team, but I'm not good enough to be Seeker." The taller boy shrugged his shoulders.

"Have you tried?" she asked.

"Nah. I don't have a broom to even go to a tryout." His ears started turning red. A sure sign he was lying or hiding something.

"How much does a broom cost?" Harriet asked Neville curiously. She might see about her mother buying one for her during the next vacation.

"Oh, they're pretty expensive. Only one per flyer in the house hold usually," Neville answered. "Only the rich can afford more than one."

"Oh!" Harriet blushed in mortification, as she realized why Ron wasn't likely to have a broom. The Weasleys were very poor by Wizarding standards.
