He was sitting still, looking at the beeping counter ticking down second by second. He had started panicking when it reached five minutes, but it was down to a mere fifteen seconds and all that was left, all that he could feel, was a cold pit of shadowed black ice filling his whole body. It had started in his stomach, spreading tendrils so cold they burned like frozen hydrogen underneath his skin. Despite, or perhaps because of them, he sat still, even as the timer hit zero and beeped three times before blacking out. It hadn't been a very dramatic death knell, but it had been enough. Shinji was going to die, in this sea of pure shadows that he had fallen into. It was almost a relief- When he was dead, it would all be over. No more Angels, no more fighting, no more anything.
As his vision darkened, almost like the ending of a cheap video, he saw a light before him. It was almost laughable- The light at the end of the tunnel appearing to him, despite all of his failures and mistakes. As his mind fell into deep silence, the last resounding thought that echoed like thunder was, "Who will remember me?"
