Ranma's New Life: Genre Rules [Episode 131247]

by Kestral

Setsuna knew that things had changed, and under normal circumstances the two groups would never interact. Ranma normally only interacted with people of a certain karmic category - which was that of slapstick martial arts that often skated the surface of the supernatural. The Senshi were of a different karmic category, but likewise only normally would contact those of the same karmic "flavor" as themselves.

Linking the two together had effects on both parties. Slapstick martial arts might target Haruka for example, while Ranma might occasionally have to deal with Menaces From Beyond or something similar.

Since the Senshi and Ranma were both "nexi" in that their own "karmic genre" tended to influence things around them, the two of them being linked meant that things were going to get stranger for more than just themselves.

Therefore, Ranma getting ready to train with his father at a Spring Of Enlightenment had repercussions that would strike far beyond two martial artists clashing in China.

"Spring of Enlightenment?" asked Ranma. Old pillars rising up around some old pond, it didn't look like much to him.

"Yes, sirs," said the Guide. "Many people seek but never find."

"Well, let's get this over with," said Genma, not expecting much as he leapt to the top of the nearest pillar.

"Oh sirs! Be careful you not fall in Spring! Wisdom always bear price!" The Guide called up, both wanting not to lose the first customers seen in years and curious to see what would happen. He'd never seen the effects of the spring himself, just read the various warnings.

"Whoa," said Ranma. After landing upon the second pillar, a warm rose color seemed to flow through the pillar, even as his father's pillar turned a sort of gunmetal blue-black. "Nice special effect."

Genma saw his son's inattention and decided to correct it. His body slammed into Ranma, who flew backwards to land awkwardly on another pillar - turning it a dark amber shade. Windmilling his arms briefly, Ranma finally caught his balance by leaping to yet another pillar, which seemed to turn the color of dark jade flowing from where he'd touched it.

Having finally caught his balance, Ranma realized that the other pillars were changing color now - and the pool seemed to be lit from within. "Uhm, is it supposed to be doing that?"

"PAY ATTENTION!" declared Genma, knocking his son off the pillar. "You need a bath anyway."

"Ahhhhh!" declared Ranma as he fell towards the spring and now could see flitting shapes within the waters.

He hit, and there was no splash, it was as if the waters simply accepted him and rolled over him.

"Huh, what's with the light show?" asked Genma as the pillars turned back to stone and the waters looked like a normal pond once again.
