Awaiting trial, weaponless with a looming stretch of jail time staring them in the face: it was every Rocket's worst nightmare.
Jessie slammed her fist against one of the metal prison bars, immediately regretting the action but pretending she didn't feel the pain that flared up in her hand.
"That brat!"
Behind her, James sat on the wooden bench, despondent. "The boss will never bail us out when he finds out what happened," he sighed. Jessie turned back to look at him, frowning. They both glanced around the small cell, taking in their surroundings, the place where- if the authorities got their way- they would remain for a long time.
"Welll, I'll be damned if I'm staying here any longer," Jessie announced quietly. Her partner shot her a puzzled look, wondering what she meant. His question was answered with an ambiguous smile, one James wasn't entirely sure he liked the look of.
"Jessie-"
"Shut up," she hissed back. "Someone's coming."
Sure enough, Officer Jenny soon emerged through the door at the end of the corridor, the jingle of her keys sounding with each echoing step she took. She stopped at their cell, switching her gaze between the two prisoners. Her expression was untrusting, not yet hostile but ready to be so at a second's notice.
"Lunch," she told them curtly. "There's soup or sandwiches- take your pick and I'll bring it up in a minute."
James' face lit up at the prospect of food. "Oh, soup sounds great, thank y-"
"We want our phone calls,' Jessie interrupted, making a mental note to hit her partner later for being polite to a cop.
With a trace of annoyance, Jenny nodded and moved to the cell door. She unclipped two pairs of handcuffs from her belt.
"All right, turn around and put your hands behind your backs, you two," she intructed boredly.
James looked questioningly at Jessie, only complying with Jenny's order when the officer told them to "hurry up or forget the whole thing".
"Okay, now you," Jenny told Jessie once she had finished cuffing James. Jessie smiled, walked up to the bars and suddenly grabbed Officer Jenny by her shirt, pulling her forward with all of her strength. Unable to react in time to dodge the blow, Jenny's head hit the metal bars with a metallic crack, and she slumped to the floor, unconscious.
"J-Jessie!" James yelped, instinctively backing away from the scene. "What are you-"
"Shh!" Jessie hushed. She reached thought the bars, fumbling on Jenny's clothing until she found what she was looking for: the ring of keys. "Here, give me your hands," she muttered, moving behind James as she tried to find the key that fit the restraints.
"Is she okay?" James asked.
"Fine. She hit the front of her head; the skull's thickest there," Jessie responded absent-mindedly.
"Pulse?"
"She's FINE," Jessie repeated.
"Well, why did you let her put these on me first if the plan was just to knock her out anyway?" James demanded as Jessie twisted a small key in the lock.
"Builds trust that we're not gonna attack her," Jessie said. "Breaks down her guard- ah, got it." She took the handcuffs off James wrists, discarding them before immediately moving to the cell door.
It was awkward work, considering that Jessie hand to reach around to the other side of the lock to try the keys, but she managed to open the door in less than a minute regardless.
"What's the plan now?" James asked, stepping carefully over the knocked-out Jenny as if she might suddenly spring back to life.
"We make a break for the storeroom," Jessie answered. She began to loot the officer's unconscious form, picking up pepper spray and a stun gun. "These'll have to do. Then we pick up our Pokemon and anyone else's we can find."
"And then?"
Jessie' grin returned, mischevious, menacing. "And then we get the heck out of this dump."
