The air exploded out of Ranma’s lungs as Genma tackled him to the ground. A short spike of pain flared at the bottom of his spine as he landed and images of a body randomly splotched with red appeared at the edge of his vision an instant before kanji started flashing.
Ranma’s attention was so diverted by the translucent kanji; he failed to notice the Guide’s foot hit a rock and send all three hundred pounds of terrified guide slamming into the father and son huddling on the ground.
Too bad the aforementioned duo had previously come to rest on the grassy bank of another pool.
The instant his shoulder hit the surface of the pool, Ranma felt a wave of intense heat burst from his skin, flash boiling the water around him. Simultaneously, a klaxon erupted in his ears and his view of the world faded out, leaving only the now solid-red body and a multitude of flashing kanji.
Both the fact that his father had both sprouted a layer of fur and that he had leapt out of the pool bellowing escaped Ranma’s awareness as the kanji continued to scroll.
Genma looked on in rising panic as his son started to thrash randomly in the boiling water. ‘Boy’s gonna die, wife’ll kill me. Boy’s gonna die, wife’s gonna kill me.’ Genuine concern for his son and the desire to not jump into the boiling water battled themselves to a standstill as the Guide laid prone and gaped in astonishment at the scene in front of him.
Ranma’s own panic started to surface as the air in his lungs started to go stale while his body continued to randomly thrash. ‘Crap! I gotta get out of here. I ain’t gonna last much longer.’ Ranma focused the will that had carried him through countless training exercises over the years into a now desperate bid for survival. ‘MOVE DAMNIT! I’M NOT GONNA DIE IN SOME STINKING POOL!’ Hope began to flare as his body slowly started to pull itself out of the pool.
