Ranma looked through the glass doors at the rows of ice cream. "Butter Pecan, Rocky Road, Chocolate Chip. . . I don't see any Portal."
"Watch." Max casually grabbed the door and opened it with a quick yank. His newly acquired cap ignited with a yellow glow like St Elmo's Fire, a spark of which extended to suddenly expand into a large disk just inside the case.
"The legendary portals. . ." Cologne murmured quietly.
"Keep close," Max commented. "You lag you'll get left behind." He stepped through the portal, vanishing from view.
Ranma stared as Cologne hopped through the portal after Max. Then seeing the portal suddenly start to shrink, he leapt through the center moments before it dissipated.
Landing on sandy ground, Ranma rolled to his feet and looked around. There was very little but unfamiliar mountains and sand as far as he could see. "Where?"
"Mongolia." Max responded as he looked around. Sighting off one tall mound of rocks he started walking. "Virgil's home's close."
"Virgil?" Ranma scratched his head a moment before making a brief sprint to fall into line behind Max. "Isn't he that dead chicken you were talking about?"
Max slowed, his head dipping downward.
"Ah, sorry about that." Ranma said in a sheepish tone.
"Don't worry." Max took a deep breath and straightened himself. "We're going to have plenty of other things to worry about." He paused as he came to a cliff. Looking it over for a few moments, he gave a little hop off the edge, spreading his arms as he dropped. He grinned as he felt the updraft slam into him, throwing him back up toward the rock face opposite the cliff. Passing through the illusion hiding the entrance, Max landed on his feet and strode into the cave he had seen once before.
