Ranma nodded, though there was little to say on the matter.
"I don't really know her that well, other than the fact that she's helped me a bunch of times."
"Good," he replied, knowing now that there was definitely less to worry about. If he'd found himself having to deal with someone who'd bothered Hotaru, then that could be trouble, and that was the last thing that he needed at the moment.
But he was still ready for anything as the young woman came to a stop in front of them.
"Hi," the tall girl told them, "I'm so glad to have found you. I was beginning to think that I was the only one on this island."
"Ya mighta been," Ranma told her, "We ain't exactly locals ourselves."
"Huh? What are you... Oh... You must be from the ships too..."
"Yup. Both of us are."
"That's good. I'd hate to think that I would be all alone in this place," the emerald eyed swordswoman replied.
"Well, Hotaru here says that you're pretty nice..."
"Wha... Oh... She must be thinking about the time that I beat up those jerks who were bothering her."
"Did ya now?" he drawled, sending a look to the white mage, who had the grace to blush.
"Of course! I hate bullies."
"And then ya must be good with that weapon of yours."
Makoto patted the sword at her hip and smiled. "I've gotten pretty good, though..."
"What?"
"I don't need it to fight."
"That's somethin' I'd wanna hear. Nice ta meet ya, Makoto. The name's Ranma."
"Good to meet you, too," Makoto answered back, and smiled at both of her new companions. It was much better than being alone, and was so much the better for having both a hunk and the younger girl around. The former was definitely someone that she'd want to know, but there had been a bit of kinship between her and the mage. Hotaru's problems might have been worse than being a tall and strong orphan, but both were outsiders who had experienced rejection for things they couldn't control. With the little she'd known of the girl, she'd seen some sweetness in her, and so it didn't seem like she'd be stuck with more arrogant jerks.
At least things were looking up while:
