The redhead had settled into the grass as well, her head resting on Nabiki's feet, her eyes closed. It felt strange, the spirits' head. Little jolts of energy prickled her skin, causing the fine hairs on her leg to stand on end. One eye opened, and Ranma squinted at Nabiki.
"What?" Ranma drawled.
"Nothing." Definitely something, Nabiki thought. She'd have to look it up when she got home. From what she had read, contact with one's summoned spirit was supposed to feel...well...slick, clammy. Nothing like this. It was like touching your tongue to a battery. Strange, but not entirely unpleasant. Ranma closed her eye again, shifting to get more comfortable. Nabiki's attention was drawn further down. Heat flushed her cheeks, and Nabiki tipped her head back to keep her mind from wandering.
"Sure is nice." Ranma spoke quietly. Nabiki hummed her agreement, paying attention to the prickling sensation coursing from her toes upwards.
"What's it like?" Nabiki looked at the nature spirit. Ranma opened her eyes again. "Back home?"
"I dunno. Trees. Grass. I'm on the road a lot with Pops, so I'm not anywhere for too long." Ranma rolled onto her side, looking up at Nabiki. "I get to see a lot of neat stuff. Old temples and training grounds."
"Sounds like fun. I'd love to go on vacation." Nabiki brushed hair out of her face.
"What's that?" Ranma asked.
"Vacation? Just getting away. Nobody to bother you. No school. No bullies. No nagging sisters or distant fathers." Nabiki leaned forward and hugged her legs.
"Sounds too much like running away to me." Ranma sighed.
"To get away from home? Ranma, I'd take your life in a heartbeat." Nabiki drawled.
"Hey, at least you've got family who'll protect you." Ranma groused. A clock bell chimed in the distance. Nabiki looked up at the sound.
"Protect me? Yeah, right. I'm the one who protects them." Nabiki's smile crept into her voice. She looked down, and her smile faded. "Ranma?"
Ranma was nowhere to be found.
