"Don't move!"
Leon shook his head, and pushed himself off the ground, ignoring the stabs of pain from where he had been hit. For a moment his vision swam before him, then he saw the other policemen who had been present now standing between him and the white haired stranger. Looking past them he saw that stranger's tiger cloaked back, as he had apparently turned toward the bridge once again.
As Leon pulled himself to his feet, Setso paused. Raising one hand he pointed to a squad of spearmen, who snapped to attention at his gesture. His next gesture directed them behind him, and they snapped their weapons ready and marched toward the line of policemen.
"Drop your weapons!" One of the policemen called. As the spearmen continued advancing unhesitatingly he added, "Stop or we shoot!"
As the spearmen accelerated, their weapons readied to strike, the cry of "Fire!" went out along the police line. Amid the clicking of hammers falling on unresponsive bullets, there was one sharp retort of a pistol working. And one of the spearmen staggered, briefly halting his advance as he grasped at his shoulder. The others struck out with their spears, some missing the cops who were desperately trying to dodge, others striking home with deadly force.
Leon looked toward his hand, from which his gun had been knocked when he was thrown back. His mind told him the odds of survival, told him to run.
Taking a quick breath Leon ran toward the spearmen, his mind franticly searching for options of what he could do. At the back of his head he felt something, a presence that seemed both new and familiar. As he sidestepped a spear thrust, for a moment it felt like he saw all the ways he or the spear could have moved.
As he stepped in and struck a left hook to the spearmans face, he felt a similar awareness of possibilities.
Then as a second spear thrust from the side, he felt it again, and this time as he dived out of the way toward a dropped gun, he half instinctively pushed at the possibility of the spear that was about to impale him, and winced as it grazed his back.
Leon's right hand closed on the handle of the pistol and as he dropped to the ground, he twisted around, swinging the pistol up and pulling the trigger. With a bang the first bullet slammed into the closest spearman.
The remaining spearmen struck at Leon in unison. More consciously pushing at the possibilities, he rolled to avoid the stabbing points, his left hand reaching out to grab a second gun and bring it up. Both pistols roared as he fired and fired again, pushing himself to his knees as the spearmen backed away from him, leaving two slain companions beside him.
