What the people of Earth saw was furry skunk-like humanoids.
Had it been a science or military vessel, things might have progressed differently. As it was a group of traders out trying to find new markets, that was what came across in the days and weeks ahead.
The people of Earth were gradually invited to join the Interstellar Conglomerate. There were moments of tension, such as when an ambassador from Belgium turned out to be allergic to fur. There were moments of conflict, such as when a member of an animal rights organization threw paint on a Salusian in order to bring attention to the inhumanity of wearing fur.
There was a reason that groups like PETA went to theatres and high class restaurants in order to throw paint on those wearing leather or otherwise violating their standards of decency. Your average Hell's Angel wore far more leather but members of organizations like Greenpeace or PETA never went into a biker bar in order to deface their leather goods.
