Saotome Ranma sat in the garden of the Tendo dojo and listlessly regarded the carps in the pond. He was almost eighteen now, his junior year of high school was nearing its close, and within two weeks the Diet-imposed cease-fire on the marriage hi-jinks would be over and everything would start up again. Because even though he had a steady girlfriend of nearly a year, neither he nor she was ready to get married. And not one of their three remaining parents would be taking no for an answer the next time they drummed up a wedding plan.
So Ranma and his girlfriend had come up with a plan: they'd go on a training trip. Unannounced, leaving in the dead of night. Final exams were already done, they'd talked to Ninomiya-sensei about attendance for the rest of the term, and every one of their friends had been given two different but still erroneous hints as to where they were going - one to tell anyone who asked, and one in confidence. Ranma chuckled a little at the thought of anyone trying to find them by using the twenty-odd false leads that would be in circulation.
Sensing a presence behind him, Ranma turned to regard his significant other.
"Did you get it?" he asked simply.
"Yes," she replied, showing him her hanko. "Yours?"
"Here. No way I'm leaving that behind. I still think I should have taken Pop's too, to keep him out of trouble." Without his hanko, it would be impossible to sign a marriage certificate. In fact, any number of binding agreements could only be signed that way, such as bank loans, leases and the like. The hanko was tied to his personal honor, and whoever held it could make more or less unbreakable promises in his name, which was one major reason why he had kept very good track of his since it was made.
"Are we still leaving tonight?"
"We'd better. I don't know how long we have until our friends start comparing notes, and we'll be in deep shit if we aren't out of here by then, even if they'll cool down eventually."
"Then let's go already, Ranma!"
Ranma performed a backflip from a sitting start and landed in front of his girlfriend grinning widely.
"Sure thing...."
