Ranma paused in his consumption of the ramen noodles before hims to grin. "Hey, I'm hungry. And it ain't like there's much ta do in rain like this."
"Ranma right," agreed a smirking Shampoo, "Is only proper that Airen eat good cooking on day like this."
"And what is that supposed to mean?" asked Akane as she glared at the other girl at the table.
"Mean that hot ramen make feel better when other cooking make you only get sick."
"Oh really..?"
"Is only truth."
"Why you..."
The pigtailed boy was saved from being at the center of another fight by the arrival of another customer. *"Damned rain,"* the raven haired young woman muttered in English, *"You could float away in that stuff..."*
Rising to meet the girl, Shampoo chirped, "Welcome to Nekohaten. You want take seat?"
*"Uh... yeah,"* said the brunette as she turned around, *"I..."* "Shampoo?!"
"Lily?!"
*"How are you? I haven't seen you for ages!"*
*"Not since Lee decided to use his girlfriend's fish bowl as a sick bag."*
As the two of them giggled, Akane asked, "Excuse me, but is something going on here?"
*"Friends of yours?"* asked Lily.
*"You remember that law that you thought was silly?"*
*"What? That Kiss of Death, Kiss of Marriage stuff?"*
*"Exactly. He defeated me."*
*"He beat you? Man, he's got to be good. And the girl?"*
*"A fiancee from an arranged marriage that his so-called father set up. But if another one of those shows up, I'm going to scream!"*
"Excuse me, but could you speak Japanese!" growled Akane.
"Sorry about that," said Lily.
"Shampoo sorry too. Not remember that Pervert Girl only still learning English."
"Hey! My English is good!" protested the youngest Tendo.
"You is learning school English. No really same thing."
"And you know the difference?"
Lily smirked good-naturedly. "She should."
Ranma blinked in confusion. "How is that?"
"She had enough time to learn, what with staying in San Fransisco to learn."
"Learn what?"
"You don't know?"
"Know what?"
"Shampoo here went to the same University that I did. That's how we met."
"You went to COLLEGE?!"
"You no think that Shampoo no have to go to school just because she pretty?"
"But... but..."
"Not only that," put in Lily, "but she's got a degree and everything."
The Amazon shrugged. "No much use when have to go and get ready for Tournament."
"But you can't speak Japanese that good!" said Akane.
"Shampoo no have ten year to learn it. Speak some Cantonese too. Enough Russian and Spanish to order food."
"And her?" asked Ranma.
"She good friend. When Shampoo little girl in big campus, she help. She study languages, so she teach Shampoo when Shampoo not studying or training in martial arts."
"That's pretty... nice."
"Was too too good. That remind Shampoo. Thought you go to New York to get job."
Lily smiled. "I did. I work as a translator for one of the big financial houses now. And when I had the chance to visit my mother's homeland, I jumped at the chance."
"You're Japanese?" asked Akane.
"Half. My father is an American importer."
"Oh."
"So, sit," ordered Shampoo, "You tell all about what you been doing."
"All right," said the American woman as she did as she was told. "Where to begin?"
"At the beginning!"
