Shampoo smiled at seeing her step-sister in the dojo. Akane was meditating, it seemed, something Cologne had taken great pains to get Akane to do. Well, it time to see if Akane had gotten good enough to meditate without tuning the rest of the world out.
Shampoo stealthily crept into the dojo... and then pounced!
And just as quickly hit the floor, not Akane. Akane herself had rolled out of the way, and was standing in her ready stance.
Shampoo smiled. "Got lucky, 'Kane. One more second, and I would have taken off your head."
Akane grinned. "Got sloppy, Sham. You were making as much noise as a herd of horses."
"I thought you could use every advantage you could get."
"Funny, I seem to recall being to one giving you the handicap the last few times we sparred."
"I think you've forgotten your place, outsider. I think you need a lesson in Amazon discipline." Shampoo's smile was threatening to split her head in two.
"Maybe the little Amazon's forgotten where she is? Or maybe you just got tired of your weak relatives, and came looking for a real challenge?"
And then the fight was on!
***
Gel smiled from where she watched her eldest daughter and youngest step-daughter spar and casually trade insults. A far cry from the open hostility the two held for each other when they first met. Akane hadn't wanted a new mother or another sister, one that was younger than she was, if only by a few months. Shampoo hadn't wanted to move to Japan, or to have a new, outsider father, and Akane's hostility made her the easy target for Shampoo's frustrations.
It got so bad that at one point, less than a year after Gel had married Soun, the girls put each other in the hospital. After that, Gel had locked the two of them together by the wrists. They'd been forced to do everything together until they could get along without fighting. (Cologne had laughed for nearly an hour straight when she found out about Gel's solution.)
But it worked, in the end. They stopped hating each other, at least. And since Akane had been dragged along with Shampoo to several of Cologne's training sessions, Cologne decided that that meant Akane was now her student as well. (In other words, Akane wasn't allowed to quit, even after she got freed from Shampoo.) And the birth of the twins helped bring them together too...
Slowly, the two warmed up to each other. Now they were rivals, sisters, and friends.
Then Gel frowned. Shampoo rarely went to the Dojo first unless she was upset. Usually, she'd talk with her mother first, and probably say hello to the others before going out to spar. What could have happened?
Well, it was going to have to wait. Soun had some family news, and wanted them all to gather...
