Mamoru Chiba had never been entirely sure of his identity. He couldn't remember anything before the accident that had killed his parents. True, the authorities had positively identified him, and sometimes the name Mamoru felt right, but sometimes it didn't. Worse, he occasionally had blackouts. He never knew what happened during these periods. For a long while they had been infrequent, but now they were getting worse. He had hoped that his dreams might give some clue as to his early life and to the blackout periods, and he did have some very interesting dreams.
Mamoru dreamed about having lunch in Atlas City, about listening to a lecture on the Second Impact in Tokyo-3, about feeding a carrot to a something that was not quite a cat and not quite a rabbit, and about beaming down to some planet which would be destroyed by a comet in three days. He dreamed about a princess who wanted him to find something for her. He dreamed about a martial artist who could change gender. (Now, that was a technique). He dreamed about hanging out in museums and jewelry stores, wearing the mask and tuxedo, while searching for a specific jewel. He dreamed about a crazy blonde girl chasing a cat. Clearly, none of these had anything to do with the real world, so they could not be memories.
Even if the dreams were not very useful, they did tend to be entertaining. He enjoyed watching the events of the various dream worlds unfold. Each dream only revealed a little about what was going on, so it was like watching a very long-running story. He particularly liked the dreams involving the princess. It was too bad she was only a figment of his imagination. He enjoyed those dreams where he sat in a park with her, looking up at the full earth.
The princess wasn't in his most recent dream. Instead it involved the sex-changing marital artist. He was still trying to understand his relationship to the boy/girl. At some times he seemed to hate the individual, but at others he thought they were quite close. Perhaps these feelings were from to different periods in the dream world, or perhaps his dream self did not realize that the boy/girl was one person. Of course there was a lot he still didn't know about this dream world. This new dream though seemed to say something about their relationship, though. In it the martial artist addressed him saying,
