Such was the case with the vampires.
Before the end of civilization as man had known it, vampires had mainly been the realm of fiction and people living out dark fantasies. Not many people believed that they were real in the 'civilized' world, and many more were seeing them as fodder for their entertainment. The idea could scare someone, but the possibility of facing one seemed to be rather ridiculous.
Standing on land that had once held life was a person who knew differently. This was an individual who'd faced vampires, and knew their varied faces, from the creatures cloaked in darkness, like in old novels, to the romantic figures out of romances, to the cruel monsters that movies portrayed. Being someone with such knowledge of them, it made it harder to pretend to believe legend and rumor.
Not that there was a single one in the immediate vicinity, as the figure straightened up, as:
