Instead, they were all standing at a meeting hall, where a small podium had been erected to one side. The young women milled in as they were guided to the place, and each of them was standing there, with any companions they might have brought given seats off to the side to watch from. Some stood alone and waited, while others looked to those they recognized. But all waited for what was clearly something that they'd have to listen to.
When the last one arrived, a man in an elaborate robe came to stand at the podium and coughed into his hand so that they would look to him if they weren't doing so already. As soon as it was clear that everyone was paying attention, he drew himself up with as much dignity as he could muster. "Hello, and welcome to you all. We apologize for your first day here, but we have been fortunate enough to have won the day."
Mutters of agreement came from the candidates, and those around them.
"I am Drygar, and it is my task to inform you of anything that you may need to know. As it stands, we've already been through a lot. However, that battle is over, and what some of you may consider another is about to start. Our first event will come up for tonight, in the form of a party. In part, it will be a celebration of your arrival, and will now also celebrate our victory, but there is something that you shall need to be aware of. Our judges will be attending as well, and will take in how each of you do during the event. They will determine just who would work out well, and who should be allowed to return to their homes."
Each of the girls reacted differently to the situation, but for all of them, it was mainly a reaction of concern and awareness of what was at stake.
"But understand this. The point of doing this is to see how you do in a relaxed atmosphere. So, enjoy yourselves, and get into the celebration as much as you might like. For those who do not have the proper clothing, we will be having dressmakers visiting you to create an outfit in any style that you might like."
More than a few girls looked interested in this development.
"Oh, and for those of you who lost your luggage in the attack, we will be replacing your wardrobe as an apology, no matter whether or not you are the chosen bride," Drygar said, and saw the smiles that lit up certain faces. However, even though they had reason to be happy, the girls did not know that this session was the first test. It would weed out the last of those who merely were going through the motions, and were dismissive of this whole situation. Finding out who was there and wasn't planning to actually try for anything would help out immensely, as it would prevent the future princess from turning out to be apathetic.
