Kane glanced back at the beautiful female and smiled. "We are going to visit a friend's house."
Seras blinked, "Wot? Visit a friend's house? You do know they're most probably dead."
Kain smiled, "I am counting on it."
"Hold up," Seras remarked, "What are you up to?"
He smiled coyly. "And I was hoping to make it a surprise."
Seras crossed her arms in indignation. "I don't trust your surprises, Kain."
The vampire laughed in amusement. "Very will, Seras. I shall tell you. We are headed towards my old 'friend' Koren's home. Koren was a bit of a dandy… a womanizing drunkard who cared more about style than the military arts. He was inept with a shield and tripped over his own armor… but he was a master with a dueling sword and his prized possession was a enchanted rapier he had crafted personally. It is a Serioli blade enchanted to give it a razors edge that never dulls, and the strength to parry even then most mighty of great swords…"
Seras rolled her eyes, "And how do you know this?"
Kain rolled his eyes, "Because the damned fool refused to shut up about it."
Seras shrugged. "Oh…"
Kain glanced over. "Now, as you are lacking a proper sword, I feel it would be worth acquiring."
Seras smiled. "Thank you."
He nodded. "Yes, now just this way…"
Kain lead them to the better part of town. The gates of the wall that separated the peasants from their supposed betters were barricaded and the streets strewn with the dead, most of whom were riddled with crossbow bolts… it seems that the nobles were taking no chances.
Looking up at the walls they could see no guards. They looked abandoned.
"Now how do we get over that?" Seras wondered.
Kain rubbed his chin for a moment and smiled. Walking to the side he lifted a shoddily constructed ladder. "It seems that they were attempting to scale the walls. Understandable considering that the granaries are located in the inner city."
Seras gasped. "You mean they were just letting these people starve?"
"Yes, to the average noble of Coorhagen, the peasantry are below consideration."
Seras looked at him. "And to you?"
"They are necessary."
She blinked. "And?"
"And what?" he replied as he placed the ladder against the wall.
She shook her head and started up the ladder behind Kain. Once they reached the top they were greeted by the vile sight of plague ridden corpses. Together the two walked to the other side of the walls and were greeted by more of the same. The streets were clogged with the bodies of those who had fallen to the plague, only this time they were better dressed.
"Coorhagen - my home - the finest city in all of Nosgoth, rich in vanity and conceit," Kain laughed darkly, "A perfect homecoming!"
Seras rolled her eyes.
"Come Seras…"
Kain lead them down the main street to a rather grandiose house. Kain barely sparred a moment before kicking the gate in and continuing to the front door. It was locked so Kain did the only reasonable thing. He smashed it with his mace.
The two stormed past the bodies of dead servants and up the stairs.
"If he is anywhere, he will be in his private quarters," Kain told Seras.
She nodded as they walked to one last door and Kain smashed it open.
Standing in the window was a finely dressed man who seems to be ill with the plague, though it had not nearly reached the point where it would have robbed him of his mind.
He smiled wearily as the two entered. "Just like you Kain, just barging in uninvited. You could have knocked, you know."
"Hello Koren," Kain growled.
"Hello Kain, I had heard you were dead, murdered by bandits with your own sword… yet you are here and as a vampire no less. Which devil did you make a deal with you escape hell?" he grinned and looked at Seras, "But more importantly, who is this ravishing creature?"
"She is a Vampire like myself, and we have come for your sword," Kain remarked curtly, "Give me the weapon and I may spare your life."
He laughed. "My life is already at an end Kain, but I am afraid I will not tell you where the sword is hidden unless you tell me why you want it."
"It's for me." Seras replied.
Koren glanced at Seras and laughed. "Of course, Kain, now I see… your lady friend is armed only with a pike – a peasant's weapon .She is lacking a proper sword, and of course, thinking me dead, you brought her to where she could acquire none other than the best sword in Coorhagen!"
"Where is the sword, Koren?" Kain growled.
"That is for me to know and you to discover for offer you a trade."
"What kind of trade?" Kain growled.
