Kakashi looked around the sterile white environment of the building. His hand dropped to where his personal copy of Make Out Paradise was stashed, but with a sigh he left it hidden, remembering the job he was performing.
"I know that we're not the most exciting place you can be, Master Kakashi," one of the technicians commented. She looked through the window into the huge room below and sighed. "Frankly, considering how many failures we've gone through, I don't think anyone would notice if you took a few hours off."
"Now, don't you get discouraged, I have my job to do and I'm going to do it properly. The potential is incredible." Kakashi stepped up to the window and looked down.
"That's what got me involved, the potential." She stared down at the large ring planted upright on a raised platform. Indeed, it seemed to be three rings, each inside the other, first a plain ring on the inside, then a set of glyph covered rectangles, and finally the outer surface, with it's regularly spaced inward facing triangles. Kakashi knew from past experience on the project that the spacing did continue under the platform, leaving nine triangles total.
"Well, if this gate does allow access to other worlds, having a Jonin level Ninja available is a vital security measure." Kakashi commented.
"Though it's mainly used as an assignment for Jonin who need to keep it easy to recover from something now, eh?"
Kakashi sheepishly put his hand behind his head.
The technician leaned forward. "I know you've heard this before, but I really believe that all that's about to change. In spite of all the failures with the standard 7 symbol dialing, we've finally translated the documents explaining why the gate has nine chevrons." She shook her head. "Can you imagine it, 9 Chevron addresses lead not just to other planets, but to other universes. And this time, we may be able to get a lock."
Kakashi smiled at the technicians' enthusiasm. "Well, that's why I'm here."
"Begin dialing procedure." The projects head intoned.
Beside him Kakashi looked at the banks of supercomputers lining the room. "Few new ones I see." He commented matter of factly.
"9 symbol addresses take more processing power, though thankfully not more energy." The project leader responded quietly, his eyes glued on the ring, it's middle ring spinning around.
"Chevron one, encoded." The technician stated as one of the triangles on the ring lit up. "Chevron two encoded."
Deep under Cheyenne Mountain, alarms suddenly started sounding. "Offworld activation, incoming wormhole!"
"Chevron eight, encoded."
The project head glanced at Kakashi, then crossed his fingers and took a deep breath.
"Chevron nine . . . is locked!" The technician cried excitedly as the final triangle lit up. From the edges of the innermost ring, a shimmering water-like force surged inward with a whooshing sound, then it suddenly began to spiral, and with a dull boom it pulled backward, with receding rings of light cycling into a bright spot of light seemingly in the distance.
Kakashi stared in shock as cheers erupted around the control room. "It worked."
"Is the remote device ready?" the project leader asked excitedly.
One of the technicians whispered briefly over his headset, then turned to the project leader. "Apparently they'd partially disassembled it. They assure me it'll be ready to deploy in about fifteen minutes."
The project leader scowled furiously. "DAMN! It works and we're not ready to take advantage!" He looked to the gate. "Can we at least send radio messages through that thing?"
"Transmitting the friendly greetings we prepared way back when, monitoring for response."
The project chief dropped into his chair. "Back to waiting then."
