She seemed stunned, on the verge of striking Ranma, but hesitated at the last second. When he blinked the tears from his eyes, he spotted the fist hovering just before his face. "Well," she said slowly, lowering her hand, though her expression was wounded, "no, I just used some baking powder."
"Baking powder for--" Ranma cut himself off before he could continue. Noodles. "Wait here a second." He dashed into the kitchen, and then back, returning with a small orange and red box labeled, 'Rat Poison: contains 100% arsenic'. "Was this the stuff you used?"
Akane nodded hesitantly. Ranma exchanged a glance with Kasumi, and turned the health warning on the box to face Akane. "Now, I'm real glad you're listening," Ranma said, shrugging, "but look at what you put into this stuff. I couldn't let a kid eat this."
The middle Tendo daughter's eyes began to widen with horror as comprehension dawned on her. Then she rose to her feet and away so quickly that she overturned the table, sending her dinner flying across the room. A deft snatch of the tablecloth allowed Ranma to bundle everything up before it got anywhere, and then he sighed, sinking to his seat again.
"Oh, my," Kasumi said quietly.
Nabiki set her teacup on the table, and sighed. "You can recognize arsenic by taste?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Well, when the village ran out of cats, they needed to find another way to deal with rodents," Genma said dismissively. "It's only natural to become familiar with your tools."
There was a long moment of uncomfortable silence here, and then Kasumi rose. "Ranma-kun," she said, "I think we should clean up in the kitchen. Would you be willing to help me?"
He hesitated, considering his options.
