And Kasumi was entirely right about his chance to try and make sure none of them became bitter enemies.
There would be limits to trust, and Hotaru was his responsibility, too. He was certain that he could perform her training with her, or at the very least, study about shiatsu and herbalism himself. He'd seen his father's skill deteriorate from training him, instead of focusing on his own skill, and he thought he'd see to it that his own skill didn't suffer while he raised her. If he was going to be a hero, he needed to start getting edges and keeping his current ones sharp; letting skills slip would be a bad idea.
Of course ... the best training he could offer Hotaru was leading by example ... but he'd taken quite a few steps in his life he didn't want her or, well, anyone except maybe Ryouga to have to go through. And even then, he'd hold back against his chief rival; a Hibiki with the neko-ken was probably too frightening for the world to endure.
No way was Hotaru going through any of that, he decided. And that meant all training needed to be done away from Genma. At that thought, the door opened, and a slightly tipsy panda stumbled in, collapsing into the pallet Ranma had already set up for it earlier. Speak of the devil, he mused, very careful not to speak it aloud.
Right, he decided. Tomorrow, he would tour his former fiancees, and friends, and rivals, and size them all up for training potential. He made a mental note to file away time for one of those things he'd never gotten enough of as a child: rest.
Then it occurred to him; he could train his own skills while he let her pursue her own interests. If he was careful, he could even use that to trick the old panda into not noticing that Ranma was training a girl.... He smiled and glanced at his father/training-dummy, for once feeling genuine affection towards it. Why, in a few short years, once Hotaru was more skilled than Genma, he'd pass her the family heirloom beatin'-panda.
Ah, he thought. Life is good.
And then he fell asleep.
